Ahora vamos a cocinar!

Hermana Maribel: Hola, soy hermana Maribel.

[ENGLISH TRANSCRIPT]

Garwin Cruz: There are people here who do not believe in the virus, as if there was no pandemic or as if there was no quarantine.

Czarny Ann Delacruz: Tijuana is known for being the most visited city, sharing a border with San Diego, and also for its cuisine.

[Show Opening]

Angelica Fisher: Hello everyone, and welcome to another “stay at home” episode of Iglesia De Cristo Mundo. I’m Angelica.

Life in quarantine has been a major adjustment for all—“a new normal” so to speak, of both blessings and challenges. How do we keep moving forward no matter how each day unfolds? Let’s go to Tijuana, Mexico and see how young people there are handling the situation.

Czarny: The quarantine here in Tijuana started approximately a week after we had our Holy Supper. It was March 12, 2020.

I am a Chemist/Pharmacy Biologist and I work in a private hospital in Tijuana.

It’s six in the morning here in Tijuana and I’m going to go out to work. My job requires us to have tied hair and to have our face masks. I work in Zona Rio. There was less movement, less public transport, fewer people on the street.

Angelica (narration): Working as a medical frontliner has its own challenges as hospitals change their protocols to deal with COVID-19.

Czarny: In the hospital where I work, before entering, they take your temperature and there is also an antibacterial gel dispenser. Before checking, you have to wash your hands, and afterwards. You also have to have face masks because if not, they don’t let you enter. I am an in-hospital pharmacist, and what I do in my work is I prepare medicines for hospitalized patients.

Angelica (narration): In Tijuana, the COVID-19 mortality rate is two times higher than the national average in Mexico.

Czarny: At work, several of my colleagues, of my friends, live with fear. They live with worries since we work in a hospital and the risk of contagion there is high.

In the midst of this quarantine, Garwin Cruz, 19, has suddenly found himself with a lot more free time.

Garwin: I am Garwin Velarde Cruz and I live in a quiet neighborhood in Tijuana. Now with the arrival of the coronavirus and quarantine, it has become even more calm and quiet.

You can start to see cars. There is even traffic, as I tell you life here is still normal. There’s still traffic, people walking, food stalls, the majority, of course, with prevention measures, but many without. Most of the people I have seen are not wearing masks, even those who sell food or drinks are not using them.

Angelica (narration): In a May 14 poll taken by the Reforma newspaper, 67 percent of respondents believe the worst effects of COVID-19 are still to come.

Garwin: Well, on entering, they gave me antibacterial and the doors have to be opened with–well, don’t open the doors without gloves. And they told me not to take this off, so you have to obey.

Now we will cook!

I’m going to cook an omelette, which is with egg, vegetables, tomato, chili, garlic, onion, coriander, with melted cheese on top. This is what I cooked, the omelette. This is potato soup or potato broth, which as you can see is pure potato with broth, and well, tortilla. I’m only going to eat two because I’m on a diet and we don’t want to come out of quarantine overweight.

One of my hobbies would be to play a little bit of guitar, and well, since I don’t know how to play very well, but what I do spend most of the time on is the keyboard or organ.

Today we also have an activity, Aid to Humanity. We’re preparing some goods to help some brethren who are in need during these times of crisis, and also some non-members.

Hello, brethren. Right now we are going to the house of the first brethren we are going to visit, and as you may have noticed before, because my family comes with me to distribute these provisions, my mother, sister and brother-in-law are coming, and they will introduce themselves.

Brother Von: Hello brethren, I am Brother Von and I am the [ministerial] worker in the congregation of Tijuana, Mexico, and in the back:

Sister Fernanda: Hello brethren, I am Sister Fernanda.

Sister Maribel: Hello, I am Sister Maribel.

Garwin: And well, more or less, in about five minutes we’ll arrive at the brethren’s house and meet there.

Czarny: The change was big since we started attending services via Webex. Since all my family are officers, normally when I leave work, I go directly to the [chapel] because we choir members have to vocalize. And I miss, truly, I miss, I really need to see my brethren there at the [chapel]. To be able to fulfill my duties together with them. I miss going to the finance office after fulfilling my duty in the choir. I do my duty there and then, I go back to the choir, we rehearse.

Garwin: Today is Thursday. Today is the day for worship service. And, well, I am very excited because again we are going to sing and we are going to listen to the lesson of each service.

Hello, not much to say but that the service is about to start. I already prepared everything and connected the laptop to the television.

[On-Screen Graphics]

Both Czarny and Garwin are members of the choir, and Garwin is an organist.

Garwin: It was a very beautiful service. I am very happy because once again we received the message from the Administration, which was very beautiful and very necessary for each one of us.

Now in this quarantine, there have been more Church activities, so that keeps me busy every day, keeps me entertained. That’s what I enjoy more—that every day there is something related to Church activities. For example, in these last days of quarantine I have met many brethren from this District, the District of Latin America, who I didn’t know were here and who are brethren who, when you meet, you are grateful. They are people who instill confidence in you.

Spending time with my family in this quarantine has been a new thing for me, something different, especially because we are all at home and in some way or another we have to live and communicate with each other.

When in a situation I do not know what to do and that I need advice from an elder, I have had that confidence in talking to my mom, and ask her what I can do. That kind of thing is new to me. I have never done it before, and I am grateful to be a little more open with them. As time goes by, we are gaining more confidence with our problems and things, and I am happy about that.

Czarny: He [God] always protects us and we also always feel His love, me and all my family. His protection, His promises. He is always with us, never leaving us in any situation, in any difficulty, in any danger.

Garwin: Above all, have courage, because that is how we should be. We members of the Church Of Christ must always have courage for everything.

Angelica: It’s important to have the courage to do what’s right and to do our part in keeping everyone safe and healthy, whether it’s by wearing a mask, washing our hands, or looking out for our friends and neighbors.

Stay safe, and thanks for watching.
