Study: Don’t Take Birth Control Advice From Social Media Influencers

News Anchor: Researchers warn young women about taking contraceptive advice from social media influencers. Experts of the University of Delaware analyzed dozens of posts of influencers with as many as 2 million followers. They found inaccurate birth control advice could be putting young people at risk for unplanned pregnancies.

Today’s Topic

“The True Influencer In Life”

Brother Bob Pellien: In today’s world, we can see that for some, the biggest influencer in peoples’ lives are those they’ve never met but see everyday on their phones. Of course, we’re talking about social media influencers who seem to be taking over the online world. People look to them for advice about moral and social issues, and even as we saw there on that video clip, online influencers are often consulted even about medical and health issues. You know, while others may believe that such influencers are admirable and worthy of our trust, today, we’re asking: Who should instead be the only genuine influencer in our lives, and why?

Bob Pellien

San Francisco, California

Minister of the Gospel

Brother Bob: I’m Bob Pellien, and that’s the topic of our discussion today, right here on the Iglesia Ni Cristo International Edition. And joining us in this important discussion, we have Brother Donald Pinnock in Toronto, Canada. Brother Donald, welcome to the discussion.

Brother Donald Pinnock: Thank you, Brother Bob. It’s good to be here.

Brother Bob: We have also with us today, all the way from Melbourne, Australia, Brother Andrew Fisher. Welcome to you as well, Brother Andrew.

Brother Andrew Fisher: Great to be with you all, brothers.

Brother Bob: Thank you, brother. And to Brother Reuel del Rosario in New York: Brother Reuel, thank you too for being with us right here in this important discussion for today.

Brother Reuel del Rosario: Hi, Brother Bob. Thank you for inviting me.

Brother Bob: You know, brothers, our topic for today, The True Influencer In Life; first let us find out by watching this initial video clip, why in our time today, why is it that influencers have risen to such high regard and recognition? Take a look at this.

Source: How Money Works

Narrator: This is not sustainable. You might have noticed a trend amongst modern social media influencers. They are getting incredibly rich. Just 10 years ago, the very top YouTubers on the platform were mostly filming out of their modest apartments, doing average skits, and living similar lives to you or [me]. Almost all of them have regular day jobs and posted to the internet because they found it fun, or at the very most, because it could earn them a little extra side money.

Contrast that with today, where some influencers have the same reach and notoriety and income as top athletes, singers, and movie stars. As this new breed of celebrity has grown even wealthier, they have been able to broadcast even more elaborate content, whether it be showing off their new mansion, giving away millions of dollars to strangers, or simply spending more money on the production of their videos.

But this whole ecosystem is predicated on something of a marketing gold rush. It is a unique and delicate blend of circumstances that made houses like this possible and that easy money situation is coming to an end faster than these people might expect.

Brother Bob: So brothers, why have influencers like those shown there, why have they risen to so much recognition in our time? How about there in eastern Canada, Brother Donald, are you noticing anything there?

[On-screen text graphics]

Donald Pinnock

Toronto, Canada

Minister of the Gospel

Brother Donald: Yes, Brother Bob. When it comes to our region of the world, first of all we understand that when it comes to influencers, they emerge from the marketing sector of society. And of course, when it comes to those who are able to influence people, when it comes to purchasing products, goods, or services, that’s where it began. We know, however, and just like what we saw in that video, that has expanded.

So for example, if there are new parents, or parents that just have had a child, and they want to learn about how to raise that child, how to bring them up, they would often look for a certain blogger, or they’ll go to a certain site, they’ll use any kind of social media platform and try to find somebody who can give them advice. And they may even base it, when it comes to the influence, how that vlogger or blogger, when it comes to how many likes they have, how many followers they have. And that is why it continues to trend when it comes to influencers.

[On-screen text graphics]

Reuel del Rosario

New York City, USA

Minister of the Gospel

Brother Reuel: Yes, Brother Donald. And even here in the Northeastern Seaboard of the United States, and especially here in New York City, also known as the Big Apple or the city that never sleeps, there has been a big influx of influencers or social media influencers and bloggers that have come from other parts of the world. And their recommendations extend even to the needs of infants such as toys, items, and clothing. And because of such things, people and parents tend to trust in what these influencers and vloggers are saying.

[On-screen text graphics]

Andrew Fisher

Melbourne, Australia

Minister of the Gospel

Brother Andrew: Yes brothers, in connection with everything that’s being said, there was actually a 2016 study that found that users of the social media platform Twitter actually trusted their social media influencers nearly as much as their close personal friends. And just imagine that’s only users of Twitter. I’m not sure about your places, brothers, but here in Australia, especially here in Melbourne where I am, it’s not just Twitter that people are using. There are many other social media platforms. And the influence is really evident in many aspects of life.

Brother Bob

Yeah, I think everyone could agree with that, Brother Andrew, but have there also been, haven’t we also witnessed a lot of scandals surrounding influencers, right, like some that have been caught advertising children, promoting failed music festivals or promoting cryptocurrency projects that ended up as a big bust. There’s been a lot of influencers that have presented failures to people that they were influencing, right?

Brother Reuel: Yes, that’s absolutely correct, Brother Bob. The danger also remains since there are influencers that primarily target children because their audience may still be naive or too easily misled by these influencers.

Brother Bob: Okay, well, although there may be those that will say that there’s nothing particularly wrong if we receive some influence in some elements or aspects of our lives. For example, the products that we choose to buy and then the places of interest we may go or bring one’s family on a vacation or something like that.

[7:20]

Brother Bob: But when it comes to moral issues, brothers—can influence our attitude or outlook of life, belief, our value system, most especially our faith—when it comes to that, who then should we listen to and consider as the only true influencer of our life?

Brother Donald: Brother Bob, if I can jump in here. That is a fantastic question. And when it comes to the answer, we’ll go straight to it. One should understand that the Almighty God is the only true influencer and one reason why, we can read here in Isaiah 48: 12, 17-18 and this is written.

The Lord says, “Listen to me, … The holy God of Israel, the LORD who saves you, says: “I am the LORD your God, the one who wants to teach you for your own good and direct you in the way you should go. If only you had listened to my commands! Then blessings would have flowed for you like a stream that never goes dry. Victory would have come to you like the waves that roll on the shore.

[Isaiah 48:12, 17-18 Good News Translation]

Brother Donald: So why is it, dear viewers, that we should listen to the Lord our God and consider Him as our only true influencer? Did you notice the Lord our God says, “Listen to me, …”. Why is it that man should listen to God? He also says, “I am the Lord your God who wants to teach you for your own good.” Well, there’s no doubt whatsoever. The greatest influencer is God, because He will never fail us if we’re going to listen to him, if we’re going to listen to Him in accordance with how the Bible teaches that God should be listened to, it will be for our benefit, it will be for our own good.

Brother Bob: So what you’re saying there then Brother Donald, for the sake of our viewers, so God truly directs people in the way that they should go. And it’s really beneficial then to follow where God tells us to go. Is that the point we should embrace there Brother Donald, that we should get?

Brother Donald: Yes, Brother Bob. Definitely. And when it comes to listening to God’s commands, of course, when it comes to listening, it means to say we understand, we believe in His teachings or His commandments, and we apply them in our lives. We put them into practice. And what will be the results? Please notice, the Lord our God says or mentions about blessings, the blessings the graces that we need, that would flow like a stream that never goes dry in our lives, such an individual, for sure, they are going to be successful.

Brother Reuel: Yes, that is so true, Brother Donald. And because they obeyed, they will surely reap victory when that time comes. And the Bible likens their victory to like waves that roll on the shore.

Brother Bob: Those that understand the verses you have read, brothers, and they choose to listen to God, they choose to follow Him. Why are they going to receive all of these victories and blessings? Why? What’s the connection there?

Brother Reuel: This is because of the special gift, Brother Bob, that God provides for His creation. And we can read that here in Psalms 139: 13, 16. It says the following:

You created every part of me; you put me together in my mother’s womb. you saw me before I was born. The days allotted to me had all been recorded in your book, before any of them ever began.

[Psalms 139:13, 16 Good News Translation]

Brother Reuel: And so God knows even our lifespan, and that has been revealed in the biblical truth that we have just read.

Brother Bob: Brothers,  maybe some of our viewers would be inclined to say something like, “Well, I know this person”—and someone comes to their mind that they perceive to be very admirable. You know, in their thoughts of those individuals. Well, they are good and they’re successful or they have a lot of wonderful human traits that anyone should look up to, and then expect that the influence or the advice they would give would be beneficial, right?

Brother Reuel: That’s right, Brother Bob. But there’s one thing that they should remember that they, too, have been created by God. And because of this, they can never surpass the knowledge and wisdom of God, what God knows, especially what is good for people.

Brother Andrew: And that’s exactly, Brother Reuel, why we’re sharing this program and this very important topic that we’re discussing, because it is our Lord God who knows what is best for us. Therefore, when we follow Him, it will always turn out for the best for all people.

Brother Bob: And since He’s the Creator, of course, He knows what is good for His creation.

[12:50]

Brother Bob: But how? If what is good for us is to listen, how do we do that? How do we listen to what God teaches?

Brother Andrew: You know, Brother Bob, we can do this by listening to the words of our Lord God. In fact, this is what the testimony of Apostle Paul says here in II Timothy 3:15- 17. It says this:

and you remember that ever since you were a child, you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching the truth, rebuking error, correcting faults, and giving instruction for right living, so that the person who serves God may be fully qualified and equipped to do every kind of good deed.

[II Timothy 3:15-17 Good News Translation]

Brother Andrew: Notice dear viewers, what is it that the Holy Scriptures or the Holy Bible teaches us? Well, not only does it teach us the truth, right living, and good deeds, but more importantly, the Bible, the words of God will teach us the way to salvation. That’s why even if there may be so-called personalities who are considered experts in moral or social issues, the words of our Lord God, written in the Holy Bible should always be our only and true source of influence. Because when we allow God’s words to influence our life, then we can prove that God is the true influencer of our life.

Brother Bob: Brothers, what should our viewers understand thus far? What is something, however, that everyone should be very careful of?

Brother Donald: Well, we hope, Brother Bob, that when it comes to our viewers, they understand that they should always be aware that if there’s any kind of opinion or belief of an influencer that goes against—when it comes to whatever issue they’re mentioning, what they’re saying goes against—the teachings of the Lord our God, we should not agree to it. In fact, we should not support it. We should not share it, we should not even like it.

Brother Bob: So, no matter how popular the influencer may be, right, Brother Donald, the words of God will always carry the weight for members of the Church Of Christ. So it’s because it assures that what we are learning from the Holy Scriptures, it comes from God and He is our Creator. So, that is what’s going to be most beneficial more than any so-called personality influencer of sorts right, Brother Donald?

[15:40]

Brother Donald: Yes, Brother Bob. Some may even ask though well, how can we listen to God? How can we really truly learn from God Himself? Well, the Lord our God practices a policy of sending messengers in different dispensations of time. So, it is to the messenger that a person should listen. This is proven by our Lord Jesus Christ, being the Son of God, and the greatest messenger, as recorded here in John 3: 34:

The one whom God has sent speaks God’s words, because God gives him the fullness of his Spirit.

[John 3:34 Good News Translation]

Brother Donald: So, how valuable, dear friends, is the one whom the Lord our God has sent according to our Lord Jesus Christ? Our Lord Jesus Christ says, “The one whom God has sent speaks God’s words, …”  So, any religion, any religious group that doesn’t believe in the importance of the commissioning of a bonafide messenger. And again, when it comes to a true messenger, they don’t take that mantle upon themselves. They have to be the fulfillment of prophecies written in the Holy Scriptures. When it comes to a true messenger, that is whom man should confide in, in order to learn the true words of the Lord our God, that when heard, and again, when put into practice, would lead them to receive the blessings, the protection, and the other graces that they truly need, as they make their way through this world.

Brother Reuel: Thank you very much, Brother Donald, for reading that verse.

Brother Reuel: That’s why, dear viewers, that is why we the members of the Church Of Christ continue to invite each one of you to listen and to study with us the words of God that we uphold inside the Church, because like what we can learn from the Bible is the true guidance that we need that will bring us to spiritual perfection. And that guidance or those words of God taught to us was from the messenger of God in these last days.

[17:40]

Brother Bob: Brothers, what though if our viewers would be thinking like this, maybe they would say, “Yes, okay, we are we are sure that God’s words would have a positive influence on our attitude and our outlook in life, but why is the authority to tell people about such things— like what is right and what is wrong, what is good and what is not good, what is evil—why does that right lie only in our Almighty God? There’s a lot of influencers in this world. Why will it only come from our Almighty God who created human beings, and in fact, even this world that we live in? Why is it that I should only give value to what He is instructing, to His guidance that He says through His messenger?”

Brother Reuel: Brother Bob, because concerning human beings, there is a truth that Apostle James reveals in his writing in the Book of James chapter 4:12,14, 16 it says the following:

God is the only lawgiver and judge. He alone can save and destroy. Who do you think you are, to judge someone else? You don’t even know what your life tomorrow will be! You are like a puff of smoke, which appears for a moment and then disappears. But now you’re proud, and you boast; all such boasting is wrong.

[James 4:12,14,16 Good News Translation]

Brother Reuel: So concerning human beings, Brother Bob, why did Apostle James ask, “Who do you think you are, to judge someone else?” Because people do not know what will happen to them tomorrow.

Brother Bob: That’s true. Why is it that that truth is so important to know and understand, dear friends? Let’s pick that up in a moment. We’ll find out when the Iglesia Ni Cristo International Edition returns.

[On-screen logo graphic]

INC International Edition

Brother Bob: Welcome back to the Iglesia Ni Cristo International Edition. Today, dear friends, we’ve been talking about who should be the true influencer in our lives and we left off by asking concerning human beings. Why did Apostle James ask, “Who do you think you are, to judge someone else?”

[On-screen text graphics]

Have questions about what you’ve heard today? Email us at info@incmedia.org to meet with a minister.

Brother Bob: You know, because people do not know what will happen to them tomorrow, right? And why—we asked this question before the break as well—why is that truth so important and so significant? Let’s go to you first, Brother Reuel.

Brother Reuel: Because Brother Bob, if our fellow humans don’t know what will happen tomorrow, then there’s no reason for us to listen to them or have them as our influencer in life.

Brother Andrew: You know, Brother Reuel, I think we should also point out that there may be things or topics that could be helpful to us, things that they might be able to teach us, but to have greater trust in these influencers, more than the trust that we have in our Lord God, and the words of our Lord God, now that is what is wrong.

Brother Bob: But wait a second. Wait a minute there Brother Andrew. What if one of our viewers would want to say this? “I know people who are really good, they’re really intelligent, they’re so smart.” What if a friend or someone, an influencer online or whoever it may be for that matter, what if they possess such good traits? Like I say they’re strong, they’re intelligent, they’re knowledgeable, they’re capable. Should they now be our complete influencer, the one that we depend on to guide us? Many would want to say yes to that.

Brother Andrew: The answer is no, Brother Bob, they shouldn’t be our influencers in life, because at the end of the day, they are still human beings. And the Bible teaches something about us as human beings. It’s written here in the Book of Ecclesiastes 9:11. Let me read what that says.

I realized another thing, that in this world fast runners do not always win the races, and the brave do not always win the battles. The wise do not always earn a living, Intelligent people do not always get rich, and capable people do not always rise to high positions. Bad luck happens to everyone.

[Ecclesiastes 9:11 Good News Translation]

Brother Andrew: You know, dear viewers, what truth remains regarding us as human beings? Well, as the Bible said, “Bad luck happens to everyone.” You know, dear friends, there’s nothing wrong with having certain traits. But there’s something we should understand about gaining traits and qualities and possessions in this life. Those things do not guarantee a person’s success. And you know what the proof of that is? Just like what we are in the Bible. Fast runners, brave soldiers, the wise, the intelligent, the capable, perhaps they have a better chance of success, however, they are not always the most successful.

Brother Donald: Well said, Brother Andrew. This proves that no matter how knowledgeable influencers may be, when it comes to specific matters or issues, we should always remember, dear friends, that since they are human beings created by God, there is a limit to what they know and to what they can do for us. And also when it comes to us or those who are listening and following the suggestions, the advice, and the knowledge of those influencers, we are also limited when it comes to our capability to be successful. That’s why it is very wrong to place one’s hope and trust when it comes to influencers.

Brother Bob: You know, brothers, studies show that you know, social media influencers really only gained momentum during this recent pandemic. When people were, well of course, stuck in their homes that their only means of social interaction, of course, was online right. Before we continue with this important discussion, let’s take a look at a story of a young woman who, in the midst of that pandemic, was far from home, far from her family and yet, let’s take a look at who was the influencer in her life.

Francesca Bocalan: After a little over a year of adjusting to living alone and working in London, the pandemic starts. So, I had a choice. Instincts telling me to go home and find a way back and away from the world that was falling apart or continue here. But what was at stake, really? See for years, my dad worked abroad to support our family in the Philippines. And now, as one of the older children, it was my turn. If I was to go home and leave everything behind including the challenging yet stable job I was blessed with, my family’s life is going to be uncertain. But how do you choose what’s right for you in the middle of a pandemic when your mind hasn’t rested and your body hasn’t slept for days. This was my prayer to God. I prayed for sleep. I prayed for rest in general, for my tired mind and body. I prayed for protection for me and my family. I prayed for peace of mind and a clear path for me to follow. I prayed for my job, for me to be able to stay in it. I prayed for inspiration and an even stronger faith so that I can continue to help myself and others.

[On-screen text graphics]

Francesca Bocalan

Close to God, Even When I’m Far From Home

Francesca: I pray for insurance one day at a time. God blessed me with the gift of retrospection and introspection. I realized I was so thankful for the little things that I hadn’t really noticed or hadn’t fully understood before. So, here I am in London. I stayed. I’m still a daughter of God who relies on Him when I’ve done all I can do, when I moved 10,000 kilometers, when I’ve endured a pandemic and when I couldn’t stay awake any longer. And even as I sat alone in a country far away from my people, I knew that that distance was filled with God’s presence. And all I had to do was to call to Him.

[27:00]

Brother Bob: We can see that Francesca, well she could have heavily relied on maybe influencers aligned to help her get through her really tough moments. Instead, she relied on God and trusted on what He could do for her, even though she could not physically see Him. Well brothers, we know the best way to be influenced by God is through His words. And brothers, you have read those Bible verses. But what advantage does learning these words of God, what will it bring for our viewers, which is why we share our Bible studies just like we are doing today with everyone? What will our viewers gain?

Brother Donald: Well, Brother Bob, if I could answer that. A person wouldn’t be taking a gamble or taking a chance. They wouldn’t be relying on guesses and even opinions and hearsays of others. And in fact, the Bible teaches us such here in I Corinthians 2:13,

We don’t have to rely on the world’s guesses and opinions. We didn’t learn this by reading books or going to school; we learned it from God, who taught us person-to-person through Jesus, and we’re passing it on to you in the same firsthand, personal way.

[I Corinthians 2:13 The Message]

Brother Donald: So what advantage, dear viewers, do we have when it comes to learning God’s words in the true Church Of Christ? We will learn it from God Himself. And when we say from God Himself, of course, we mentioned earlier the Lord our God has mouthpieces. Those are the messengers sent by the Lord our God. They are gifted with the true gospel, the true words of our Father in heaven. So, if we are going to listen to a bonafide messenger, well that is tantamount to hearing the voice of Christ and the voice of the Almighty God. Therefore, when it comes to our actions or deeds in life, they’re not going to be based on, again, guesses and opinions. It’s not just by reading books. It’s not just by following somebody who has many followers and has many likes. It’s not by those influencers.

And this is the very reason why, dear friends, we always have this open invitation to you. For you to study with us when it comes to a local congregation of the Church that is close to your residence or even your place of work. And you can enter therein, you can speak with a minister and evangelical worker and you can ask for Bible studies so you can hear the true teachings of the Lord our God, that when, again, believed in when followed and obeyed, for sure we will be successful in life and most especially, we will be able to be assured of attaining the true life which is everlasting.

Brother Reuel: And to add to that, Brother Donald, if we fill our lives with God’s words, then we ourselves can now help others, especially among our close friends and family to know who the true God is. And we know that the true God should be the influencer of our lives.

Brother Andrew: And Brother Reuel, you mentioned helping others. You know, we want to call the attention of the parents, because as parents if there’s any other people that we want to help, well, it’s our children. That’s why as parents we have to keep a careful watch over our children. You know, what are they watching? What are they reading on all platforms of media? And especially our children who may be at that age of adolescence, you know, between 10 and 19 years old because they could be easily influenced because they’re going through that stage of what is called self-discovery.

Brother Bob: That’s why, dear friends, we want to inform all of you, our viewers, that here inside the Church Of Christ, we have Christian Family Organizations that cater to the needs of the family, down to the youngest child and every age for that matter. Discover with us the truth that we uphold here inside the Church Of Christ because it’s our aim to guide everyone to learn God’s truth, to learn His commandments. Again, Brother Reuel, what are our viewers going to benefit from that?

Brother Reuel: Brother Bob, that’s the true guidance that will bring us tremendous joy. And we can read that here in Psalms 119:18, 19 and 24.

Open my eyes, so that I may see the wonderful truths in your law. I am here on earth for just a little while; do not hide your commands from me. Your instructions give me pleasure; they are my advisers.

[Psalms 11:18, 19, 24 Good News Bible]

Brother Reuel: So like what we have just read Brother Bob, God’s words can bring the best influence that we need in our lives. And when we are guided by the words of God, we will certainly see the wonderful truths of God written in the Bible, and the result of obedience to His commandments in our lives. And why should we do this, beloved viewers? Because we are here on this earth for just a little while. And so wouldn’t it be such a great experience for us to feel how God’s words will give us true pleasure and guidance and influence to bring us to our true home?

Brother Donald: That’s so true, Brother Reuel, when it comes to those teachings of the Lord our God, His wisdom, His knowledge. If we make Him our true influencer, our one and only influencer, it will be a wonderful experience. And what else do we hope your decision would be when it comes to studying the words of God inside the true Church Of Christ? Well as the Bible teaches, “they are my advisers.” We will never lack any kind of advice or guidance. We will be able to find that peace in the midst of the maelstrom of life that we’re going through because God Himself, He is our true influencer inside the Church Of Christ.

So, dear friends, take the opportunity. Don’t wait because we do not know what will become of us in the future. We don’t know how long we have when it comes to living in this world. Have a Bible study, contact the minister of the gospel in a congregation nearest you.

Brother Bob: We hope, dear friends, that we’re able to help you understand that when it comes to moral issues which can influence our attitude, our outlook, our life for that matter, our beliefs, our values and most especially our faith in God, we should listen to our Almighty God Himself and it’s because He is the influencer, the true influencer of our lives. We thank you. We thank our Lord God, for showing us this biblical truth and enabling us to share it with you about this important topic and we hope that all of you, our listeners and viewers, will benefit from the words of God that we uphold here in the Iglesia Ni Cristo, the Church Of Christ.

Well, that’s all we have time for. We’d like to thank Brother Donald Pinnock there in Toronto, Canada, Brother Andrew Fisher there in Melbourne, Australia as well as Brother Reuel del Rosario there in New York City. Brothers, we’d like to thank you all for providing for us Bible-based answers, so that as the Apostle Peter said to the members of the Church, “you will be ready to speak up and tell anyone who asks why you are living the way you are.” (I Peter 3:15).

Brother Bob: Well that does it for us here on the Iglesia Ni Cristo International Edition. We hope you’ll join us again next time. I’m Brother Bob Pellien. Thanks for watching. Before we go, we invite you to please join us for a short closing prayer.

Brother Donald: Merciful and loving Father in heaven. With joy in our hearts we draw near unto you through prayer at this time. We thank you so much for being with us when it comes to this episode of this program. Your Spirit, dear Father, has been felt within our hearts and it is our fervent hope that you will touch the hearts of our viewers, most especially those who are not yet members of thy Holy Church, that they may come to the realization that You are the One and only true influencer in their life. That if they will accept you by accepting Your teachings, by believing in them and putting them into practice, as members of the true Church Of Christ, then everything will go well for them. Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, please mediate our prayers unto the Father. And may you also bless our viewers today. We ask of you Lord Jesus, touch their hearts with Your spirit. Motivate them, that they will listen to the true gospel and become members of thy Holy Church. Dear God once again we pray unto you, it is our faith that you’ve heard our cries, that you’re granting us an answer to our prayers, because we humbly ask for everything in the precious name of thy only begotten Son, our Lord, our Redeemer, Jesus Christ. Amen.
