Christian Media: Where Truth Meets You

Why Show Kindness to Others?

What does the Bible say about helping others and getting involved in the community? What should motivate Christians to show kindness to those in need?

Why Show Kindness to Others?

Brother Ruben Bustos: We inside the Church Of Christ care about our communities, that’s why we go to great lengths to extend a helping hand. We are also concerned about the things that happen in our community as well as  what’s happening in various parts of the world.

Brother Andrew Taaca: And this is all the more evident in times of calamity. We are quick to assist, not only our fellow brethren but also our fellowmen. But why do we do this? And how do we do this?

Brother Ruben: Please stay with us on The Message to find out.

Brother Ruben Bustos

Minister of the Gospel

Brother Ruben: Welcome back to The Message. Now, Brother Andrew, we are talking about the biblical reason why we are involved in civic activities and projects. What is the commandment of our Lord God that we follow which is why we participate in civic or community activities and projects?

What does the Bible say about helping others?

Brother Ruben: We can find the answer here in the Book of Matthew chapter 19 and the verse is 19, this is what the Bible mentions:

respect your father and your mother; and love your neighbor as you love yourself.”

[Matthew 19:19 Good News Translation]

Brother Ruben: Now, God’s instruction is very clear—that we should love our neighbor as we love ourselves. Now our neighbors refer to our fellowman. So we need to ask, how can we prove this? How can we prove our love for our neighbor or our fellowman?

Brother Andrew: It’s proven to us through the Holy Scriptures, in Galatians, the chapter is 6 and the verse is 10, this is what it reads:

So then, as often as we have the chance, we should do good to everyone, and especially to those who belong to our family in the faith.

[Galatians 6:10 Good News Translation]

Brother Andrew Taaca

Evangelical Worker

Brother Andrew: We prove our love for our fellow man by doing good for them whenever we have the chance.

Brother Ruben: The Church Administration often admonishes us to be involved in helping our community. For example, we have blood donation drives, we have medical missions, we have community clean-ups and various projects like that. But why do we need to do good whenever we have the chance? What is it that many are looking for nowadays?

We can find the answer here in Proverbs chapter 29, verse 26, this is what the Bible teaches:

Everyone tries to get help from the leader, but only God will give us justice.

[Proverbs 29:26 The Message]

Getting involved in the community

Brother Ruben: People nowadays, because of the world’s current situation, are looking for help. Now, the Bible made it very clear that God will provide that help through His servants. Now, we know that this is all the more evident today.

For example, when there was a natural calamity that [hit Canada recently], the Executive Minister, Brother Eduardo V. Manalo, admonished the brethren to help. Many brethren drove four to six hours to be able to help or assist not only their fellow brethren inside the Church, but even their fellowman. So, the point Brother Andrew, that our brethren were basically accepting them into their homes until they were able to stand on their own two feet.

Not only during times of natural calamity, but we also have what is called the Felix Y. Manalo Foundation inside the Church Of Christ that is quick to assist all of those affected by natural calamities and various types of assistance during our time.

We also have INC Giving projects to be able to help people who are in need. In fact, recently we can see, or rather we have heard, what our Executive Minister had done when he launched the project to fight poverty. Not only for those who are members of the Church Of Christ, but even non-members of the Church Of Christ as well.

But Brother Andrew, is this something that is new or was it done even during the time of the apostles?

Brother Andrew: Brother, it is not something new. In fact, we can read the answer in the Book of Acts, the chapter is 11 and the verses are 28-30. Please listen to what is written here:

One of them, named Agabus, stood up and by the power of the Spirit predicted that a severe famine was about to come over all the earth. (It came when Claudius was emperor.) The disciples decided that they each would send as much as they could to help their fellow believers who lived in Judea. They did this, then, and sent the money to the church elders by Barnabas and Saul.

[Acts 11:28-30 Good News Translation]

Brother Andrew: We should notice, dear viewers, that during the time of the apostles, a prophet by the name of Agabus prophesied that there would be a severe famine all over the earth.

Brother Ruben: Now, Brother Andrew, what is it that the disciples had done?

Brother Andrew: The members decided that they would give as much as they could to help those who are going to be affected by famine in Judea.

Brother Ruben: Now, what is it that the brethren had given during that time?

Brother Andrew: Well, they sent money through the Church Administration to help those that would be affected. This is also what is being done today inside the Iglesia Ni Cristo (Church Of Christ).

Every weekend worship service, we have what is called our lingap offering, or our Aid To Humanity. This offering is used to immediately assist those who are in need, because of natural disaster or calamity. It also is used to support projects like free dental, medical clinics that are being conducted in various parts of the globe.

That is why, what we are doing now, it’s not something new. It’s not something made up. It is biblical. It is the will of God.

Brother Ruben: Now, one might say and ask, well, what motivates us to do this? What motivates us, beloved friends, to help our fellowman by means of various activities and various projects? Here in the Book of Proverbs, this is what the Bible teaches to us. Please take note of this. Proverbs chapter 3, and the verses are 27-28:

Whenever you possibly can, do good to those who need it. Never tell your neighbors to wait until tomorrow if you can help them now.

[Proverbs 3:27-28 Good News Translation]

Brother Ruben: Now, according to what we have read, the Bible mentions that we should never withhold help from those who need it now. That’s why, through the leadership of our most beloved Executive Minister, Brother Eduardo V. Manalo, we strive our very best to give help to those who need it whenever we possibly can.

Now, what does it mean when we help those who are in need? How important is this to us, members of the Church of Christ?

Brother Andrew: Well, in Proverbs 14:21, 31, this is what it says:

It is a sin to despise one’s neighbor, but blessed is the one who is kind to the needy. …Whoever oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God.

[Proverbs 14:21, 31 New International Version] (incorrect graphics timecode 7:28)

Brother Andrew: Whenever we help those in need, the Bible says, we honor our Lord God. That is why those who do this are truly blessed by Him.

Community Outreach Projects: Neighborhood Appreciation

Woman: This local is so united, that it’s one of the first things… the first time I visited as a guest at the Church, when my dear Brother Joe invited me. That’s one of the first things that hit me, was the unity. That unity is still as strong today.

Woman 2: I think this is wonderful because this just lets the community know that you care.

Sebastian Korintenberg [in German]: Well first of all, we find your involvement really awesome especially when people come voluntarily. And we are glad that there are those who are committed to doing this. Because you want to be involved with nature and do something in natural surroundings.

Our Lord Jesus Christ, we would also like to thank You for guiding us and being with us, dear Lord. May You remain with Your people in these last days and may You please bring our humble pleading to our Father, that we may receive all of the guidance and blessings that we need.

Dear God, above all, continue to remember and bless the Church Administration. May You continue to utilize them as we help our fellowmen that, dear God, through this and our various activities we will be able to bring glory to Your Holy Name.

We believe, Dear Father, You have accepted our prayer. In the Name of our Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus. Amen.

Brother Ruben: Amen.
