Fun Ways to Spend Quality Time With the Elderly
Kez: Hi. Good afternoon. All the way down here from Melbourne, Australia, it’s me Kez G.
Kez: You may be wondering why I’ve got this crate full of artificial flowers. Because today is a special INC Giving day for me. It’s one of my favorite ways to give back to those who need it.
Kez: And you’re going to find out soon enough what we’re going to do with them. So let’s start the car and hop on with me. Let’s go.
Kez: Hi everyone.
INC Giving Volunteers: Hello!
Lois Yamuta: Hi!
Kez: Flowers. More flowers.
Kez: What are we doing today, Brother RC?
Brother Romie Cartalaba: We’ll be having our INC Giving ‘Singing For a Cause’ here in Arcare Aged Care.
Kez: And we’re singing today, yes?
Brother Romie Cartalaba: Yes, of course. We’re so excited to do it.
Kez: Let’s go.
Kez: So this is Lois. Say hi.
Lois Yamuta: Hello. How are we doing?
Kez: You are [an] aged-care worker, that’s right?
Lois Yamuta: Yes, I’m a registered nurse. So, our residents, that’s what we call them here. We’re going to be singing a song for them. Yes.
Kez: Why is something like this, like, quite important?
Lois Yamuta: It is very important because when we talk about, you know, when we grow older, sometimes we do feel a bit lonely. And sometimes when we are in the nursing home, we feel a bit isolated.
Lois Yamuta: You know, having that activities will help us have a very, a very better, a better mood. Yes. And yeah, that’s really it. It’s also empowering them to just sing the songs they’re familiar with.
Kez: I would say that was a success, don’t you think?
INC Giving Volunteers: Yes!
Kez: So that was fun. It was so much fun just going there and just singing songs to the residents. It was really awesome because the residents actually stood up and sang with us and interacted with us.
Kez: They looked so grateful for us to be there to entertain them, to spend time with them. This is why this is one of my favorite INC Giving events.
Kez: It’s so simple. You just rock up, sing a song, and someone is happy. Nothing. It cost us nothing to do that. And so–and at the end of the day, everyone came out with smiles on their faces, including me.
