Genghis Khan, Adolph Hitler, Saddam Hussein. All men gained notoriety for their brutality, their cruelty, and their utter disregard for human life. However, the greatest murderer of all time has somehow deceived many people into thinking he doesn’t exist. Who is public enemy #1? And are you safe from his dangerous schemes?
Anchorman: Good evening and welcome to a Nightline Face Off. Our question tonight is a very provocative one. Does Satan exist?
Woman: This is my question: I’m a Christian. I don’t believe in the devil or anything like that. Does that mean that I’m going to hell?
Man: There’s some type of evil out there. I don’t know if it’s the devil but there are evil things out there.
Welcome to Face the Truth, a program brought to you by the Church of Christ. I am Brother Barry Thompson. John Dillinger, Al Capone, were some of the most notorious gangsters in their day. Adolf Hitler, Idi Amin, Saddam Hussein, were some of the most notorious dictators in their time. Now the mere mention of the names of these men brings thoughts of crime, terror and death. These men and others like them were responsible for the death of hundreds of thousands to millions of people. However, their crimes against society, no matter how severe, do not come even close to the one that we will study about today, the all time Public Enemy #1. Who is and has been man’s #1 enemy? Let’s read what is written in the book of I Peter, the chapter is 5 and the verse is 8. This is what the Holy Scriptures tell us:
[I PETER 5:8]
Take note, the Bible mentions about the devil. The devil is looking for someone in whom he may devour. Now why do we believe that the devil is mankind’s #1 enemy, especially when there have been people like Hitler who was responsible for the death of millions? How about Genghis Khan, the ruler of the Mongol empire, who some estimate to have killed around 40 million or more during his time? Now today, people will think of Saddam Hussein or Osama Bin Laden as the very worse. Now most won’t even think about the devil. Now why is the devil the worst? When did he start murdering people and when all is said and done, how many will be his victims? Let’s read what the Lord Jesus Christ says in the book of John the chapter is 8 and the verse is 44.
And so the Lord Jesus Christ tells us that the devil has been a murderer since the beginning. Now why did Christ say that the devil has been a murderer since the beginning? Who were the first victims of the devil? This is what Apostle Paul says in II Corinthians the chapter is 11 and the verse is 3.
[II CORINTHIANS 11:3]
Now Apostle Paul tells us that the serpent or the devil deceived Eve, the first woman. And we know it was not only the first woman, but even the first man, Adam, was also deceived by the devil. Now what was the result of the first couple being deceived by Satan, or the devil? Let’s now go to Romans chapter 5 and the verse is 12 again from the Apostle Paul, he says this:
When the first couple sinned, death entered the world and death spread to all men because all sinned. Now this is the reason why Christ said that the devil has been a murderer from the beginning because he tempts man to go against God’s commands and laws. And when man breaks God’s commandments or God’s laws, he commits a sin and the result of sin is death. So without a question then, he is Public Enemy #1, the devil that is, the most notorious murderer of all time, the number of his victims is too staggering to count. In fact, of all of the murders, the killings and atrocities committed throughout history combined cannot come close to what the devil has done. Now the only difference is he has not gotten as much publicity as others like Hitler or Saddam Hussein. And the truth is, no one talks about him much, which is a part of his scheme or his way of doing things. Now how many will be the victims of the devil when all is said and done? Let’s go to the book of Revelation the chapter is 20 and the verses are 7 to 10.
After the Day of Judgment, at the final battle, the number of those deceived by Satan is as the sand of the sea, meaning innumerable. Don’t bother to count anymore. Now what will happen to Satan and all those who are deceived by him and will be deceived by him? They will be thrown into the lake of fire, which the Bible calls as the second Death where they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.
So the most notorious men in history, they were feared in their time. And so people would do their best to avoid becoming their victims. Yet in the case of the devil, the most dangerous of all to mankind’s welfare, many are unaware of his existence and even if they are aware, are not necessarily worried. Now usually when the devil is mentioned, people will think of things like what they see in the movies: demonic possessions, satanic rituals and other evil things. Now since these things are not everyday occurrences, then it may seem that the devil is not at work. But how busy is the devil? And how does he operate? We’ll find out when we return of Face the Truth.
Man: I’m sorry Berness, were you in the middle of something?
Berness: My latest work, the Devil, History and Myth, a kind of biography.
Interviewer: Who is he (the devil)? What is he like?
Student: Umm…it’s not like I’ve seen him in person before…haha.
Berness: I saw him one day. I was 15 years old and I saw him as plain as I see you now.
Girl: Ohh….ahhhh….like, I just hung out with him last week! Hahaha….I have no idea. I really don’t even…I’d never thought about it. I don’t wanna think about it, so…
Woman: Well, some things, pal, you shouldn’t know.
Man 2: Like what? Like what!? And if you know, you should never ever tell.
Student 2: (He) likes to play…I’d like to say, games here, here on earth to kind of stray people away from being righteous or morally good or whatever. He’s like a trickster, I like to believe.
Devil: Fellas, this, as some of you might know, is my 10,000th year as Prince of Darkness.
Student 2: He kind-of uses what the person desires most in his heart in terms of maybe what’s not-so morally right and kind-of uses it as like, “Oh no it’s ok! It’s fine! You could totally do that. It’ll be cool.”
Student 3: There’s some type of evil out there, I don’t know if it’s the devil but there are evil things out there.
Devil 2: You’re the one soul I would come up here to collect myself. Mmhmm.
Welcome back to Face the Truth. Today we’re studying about the all-time mass murderer, the devil. The atrocities that he has inflicted on mankind are without equal. He’s the baddest of the bad, the worst of the worst, the most notorious of all history’s notorious people. Yet the devil is not given as much attention as one would give to a person such as Saddam Hussein or Hitler for that matter. Now the reason is because people don’t believe he’s always at work. And they don’t know how he works. Well, how busy is the devil? We’re gonna read a verse that we read earlier, I Peter 5:8 from a different rendition of the Holy Scriptures. This is what is stated:
[ I PETER 5:8 ]
Now according to what we have read, the devil is always at work. He walks about like a lion or he’s always on the prowl looking for someone to devour. So the devil does not stop. He is relentless in his work. Now when all the more is the devil on the prowl? I’m gonna read Revelation 12:12 and this is what is written:
[ REVELATION 12:12 ]
The devil is not only relentless. The Bible tells us he is filled with great rage. Why? Because he knows he only has a short time left. He knows he’s doomed. And so he’s gonna take as many people with him as possible. This is similar to what happens to some criminals when they are cornered and have no place to escape. They decide that they’d rather go down in a blaze of gunfire and try and kill as many people as possible. This is also what the devil is doing at this moment. And so the Bible says it’s a terrible time for the earth. Now most people today refuse to believe that they can be or they are victims of the devil. Some doubt that the devil even exists. Let’s take a look at this:
Man: The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn’t exist.
Woman: Do I believe the devil exists?? Umm…possibly. I don’t know.
Man 2: I don’t believe the devil exists. I believe it’s a construct of…It’s used to keep people to…behave, stay in line.
Man 3: I think people have the capacity to we’re really extremely bad and ugly and evil. Is there an entity called the devil that does things to you? I’m not really sure.
Woman 2: Do you believe in the devil?
Woman 3: Literally? Of course not.
Woman 4: Not in reality, no. Because I believe it’s an opportunity in the mind rather than a physical being.
Woman 5: I do think the devil exists because good and evil do exist on this planet.
Woman 6: I don’t know. It’s kind-of a scary thought. I just choose not to really pay much attention to it, but I do yeah.
Woman 2: So would you, if you’ve seen what I’ve seen?
Man 4: Not even just from personal experience but just like, hearing a lot of people and watching TV and going through everyday life, I feel like there is evil in the world.
Man 5: You truly believe in the devil Berness?
Berness: Enough to devote my life and my library to him. Not to mention many years of work. Don’t you?
Man 5: Almost.
Now as we said earlier, most people today refuse to believe that they can be or are victims of the devil. Maybe it’s because of the way he is portrayed in movies, art and literature. Nothing they have seen in the media has ever happened to them. But maybe if people knew what it truly means to be a victim of the devil and how many victims he already has, they would think twice. Well first let’s find out, how many are already his victims? For the answer, we’ll go to the Holy Scriptures, Revelation again, chapter 12 and the verse is 9.
[ REVELATION 12:9 ]
The Bible tells us that the devil or Satan deceives the whole world. Now we must remember that he has been at work since the beginning and has never taken a break or gone on vacation. Nowadays, he’s even more relentless. Does this mean there is nothing we can do, or we are all destined to become his victims? No. There is something we can do. But first we need to find out or we need to know how he operates. Now we’ll find out when we return on Face the Truth.
Student: Now you’re kind-of aware of both sides of the spectrum. You know about God who’s good and then you know about the devil who isn’t. So just knowing that there’s 2 sides to choose to live your life on…Seeing that you’re totally educated, then you can kind-of figure out how you wanna live your life and do that.
Student 2: I kind-of just keep it that. I know what my morals are, I know what I need to do. So I just kind-of keep my path in that straight line of what I need to think in my head.
Welcome back to Face the Truth. We continue in our study today about mankind’s #1 enemy, the devil. Now we learned he deceives the whole world and is more relentless now more than ever because he only has a short time left. So we need to know how NOT to become a victim of the devil. We need then to know how the devil operates or his modus operandi. Now Christ called him the father of all lies. So we also read that he deceives the whole world. Well, what is deceit? Well deceit can be defined as a distortion of the truth. Now as human beings, we are easily deceived, of course some more than others.
Now this is an everyday occurrence from your small time street hustlers to false advertisements and investment scandals, the media, and sadly, government officials can be added to the list of those who deceive us. Now if people can so easily be deceived by their fellow men, how much more by the devil, who is the source of all lies or distortions of the truth? Now what exactly is the truth that the devil distorts? John 17:17 We read again from our Lord Jesus Christ, he says:
And so the Lord Jesus Christ tells us that the word of God is truth. And so the devil will then do his very best to distort the words of God. This is how he deceives. So anything that goes against God’s commandments or violates any of God’s laws is a deception of the devil. What is one deception of the devil? Let’s read what is written in the book of Psalms, the chapter is 14 and the verse is 1 this is stated:
The Bible tells us that those who say there is no God are fools. Yet this is a belief that is growing in popularity nowadays. Those who call themselves atheists say there is no god. Now this is an obvious distortion of the truth. Now we’re not gonna get into details as to why on this particular episode. However, this brings us to our next point, and that is that people who are religious, especially those who believe in and use the Bible as the basis of their faith say they could not be deceived by the devil. Well let’s look at one or two simple examples, which we have discussed so many times in detail on other episodes of this program. First let’s find out what the word of God states in the book of Isaiah, the chapter is 46 and the verse is 9. We’ll actually be reading the words of God Himself. He says this:
Now the Lord God said, “Acknowledge that I alone am God and that there is no one else like Me.” Now we ask this question: is this statement of God ambiguous? Is it not easy to understand? God said, “I alone am God.” He used the pronoun, “I”. He said there is no one else like Him. He didn’t say, “we” or “us” but rather “I alone am God.” Now let’s look at how this truth about God has been distorted.
In this small book entitled ‘Evangelical and Roman Catholic Beliefs compared’ by Albert J. Sanders on page 5 this is written in the introduction and I quote:
[EVANGELICAL AND ROMAN CATHOLIC BELIEFS]
Now notice that both Catholics and Protestants share the belief that God is composed of 3 persons namely the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. This doctrine is called the Trinity. Now is the term ‘trinity’ found in the Bible? We’ll just read an excerpt from Protestant theologian Augustus Hopkins Strong in his work ‘Systematic Theology’ and he writes this and I quote:
And also Catholic defenders Leslie Rumble and Charles M. Carty in their popular work ‘Radio Replies’ state, and I’m quoting the excerpt:
And so take notice, the term Trinity is not found in the Scriptures nor can anyone claim the concept is there because the Lord God unequivocally stated, “I alone am God.” Yet, more than a billion Catholics and hundreds of millions of Protestants believe this unbiblical doctrine.
How about the others, the other religious groups like the Jehovah’s Witness who believe in 2 gods, namely the Father being the almighty God and the Son, the Lord Jesus Christ being the Mighty God? Then you have the Mormons who believe in a multiplicity of gods. These are just a few examples. And there are many more teachings of God that the devil has twisted or distorted to deceive people which is the very reason why we developed this show Face the Truth, to expose the twisted doctrines of the devil and not to insult the belief of others.
However, why is it that when the teaching of God is so clear, for example, when God said, “I alone am God,” why are people so easily deceived into believing something else? What does the devil actually do to people? Let’s read from the book of II Corinthians the chapter is 4 and the verse is 4, the Apostle Paul says this:
[II CORINTHIANS 4:4]
What does the devil do to people? The devil blinds the minds of people to keep them from believing what is true or seeing the truth of the gospel. And so no matter how clear the truth may be (or) easy to understand it may be, a person who’s mind has been blinded by the devil would not be able to see the truth. Even at this moment when we are presenting this issue to you our viewers, there may be those who are already dismissing what we’re showing you. Now we must remember that the devil is always at work. He doesn’t care about you or your family. He will do whatever it takes to get you and to keep you ignorant or blind. And he is the best at what he does and when you say, “I am not deceived”, oftentimes you are because that’s the part of the deception to make you believe that you are not deceived or that what you have believed in all your life has to be true. Now is there no way out of this dilemma? You know, if the devil can deceive the whole world, then who can actually avoid his schemes? Well we’ll find out when we return on Face the Truth.
Welcome back to Face the Truth. The greatest deceiver and murderer the world has ever known is none other than the devil. He is the deceiving the whole world by distorting the truth. And if we are deceived by him, we will face eternal condemnation or the second death in the lake of fire. Now sadly, though this is not what people want, this is exactly what will happen to most. The question is: why? And the answer to why most will be deceived as well as the solution is contained in the following verses: In II Thessalonians the chapter is 2 the verses are 9 through 12. This is what the Apostle Paul tells us:
[ II THESSALONIANS 2:9-12 ]
Why is it that so many people are and will ultimately be deceived by the devil or Satan? Because according to the Bible, they did not welcome and love the truth so as to be saved. And so what will God allow to happen to them? He will allow them to believe what is false, resulting in their condemnation. And so if we are deceived, it’s our own fault. To avoid being deceived then and for us to be saved, we must love and welcome the truth.
So you have to be honest with yourself. Do you really want the truth? Can you handle the truth? And what are you willing to do for the truth? Your desire for truth must be the most important thing in your life. More than money, power, fame, family, etc. Now if you don’t desire the truth more than other things in life, then the devil will be there to use the things in this world to deceive you and keep you from knowing the truth that you may end up where he is going. And so the truth may be painful at first. But whether we like it or not, whether we believe it or not, the truth is something we all must face. Thanks for joining us on Face the Truth. I am Brother Barry Thompson. Until next time, take care and God bless.
