Brother Bob Pellien: There is a growing trend in people believing in God, but have no religion.

[On-Screen Graphics]

Today’s Topic: Does God Know Me?

Brother Bob Pellien:   In fact, a study shows that 50% of Americans believe that good deeds will get you into heaven. Meanwhile, studies show a third of Americans don’t even think about heaven at all. Many may say, there’s no need to be a part of a church or religion because they say, I’m sure God knows me. Because I know him. I have faith. And well, that’s enough. Yes, dear friends, you may know God. But does God know you? Knowing God, and God knowing us– well, those are two different things. So today, we’re asking, is it enough to say, “I know God.” Who does God know and recognize as His people or His children? I’m Bob Pellien. And we’ll let the Bible answer that and much more today, right here in the Iglesia Ni Cristo International Edition.

Brother Bob Pellien: And joining us today in our discussion is Brother Andrew Fisher in the Land Down Under in Australia. Once again, brother Andrew, thank you for joining us in this important discussion. Thank you.

Brother Andrew Fisher: Thanks for having me, Brother Bob.

Brother Bob Pellien: And from Alaska. We have Brother Jay Acuña. Brother Jay  thank you for joining us from the beautiful, beautiful mountains of Alaska.

Brother Jay Acuña: Greetings, Brother Bob, and all our friends.

Brother Bob Pellien:  And we also have joining with us today, Brother Joseph Penwell from Minnesota. Brother Joseph, thank you also for joining us in our discussion today.

[On-Screen Graphics]

Joseph Penwell

Minister of the Gospel

Minneapolis, Minnesota

Brother Joseph Penwell: Thank you, Brother Bob, thank you for inviting me here. Greetings from Minnesota.

Brother Bob Pellien:  Brothers, today we’re asking, as you may have heard me mentioned already, does knowing God automatically mean that he knows you? And is there even a difference between knowing God and God knowing or recognizing you? Or is that one in the same? Let’s go first to you, Brother Jay, to open up our discussion.

Brother Jay Acuña: As you mentioned, Brother Bob will let the Bible answer by reading what is written in Galatians 4:9:

But now you know God. Even better, God knows you. So why are you turning back to those weak and worthless beliefs? Do you want to be slaves to them all over again?

[Galatians 4:9 New International Reader’s Version]

Brother Jay Acuña: Evidently everyone must understand that knowing God, and God knowing us are different things.

Brother Bob Pellien: Wait a second Brother Jay, why do you say that they’re different and they’re not the same. A lot of people would think they’re the same.

Brother Jay Acuña: Because the Bible explains that knowing God is important. Unfortunately, many people-they don’t really know who the true God that the Bible teaches really is. And even if someone has reached that knowledge of God, it’s not enough. Why are we sure? Because as we read in the Bible, it is even better that God knows us. So clearly, God is important to know. But what is more important is God knowing us.

Brother Andrew Fisher: And Brother Jay, if I can just add from what you said, because anyone can claim that they know God. In fact, many people do claim that. However, what’s more important is that God knows us

Brother Bob Pellien:  So the question then now is that well, who does God know? Who does He recognize? Are religious,  you know so quote, unquote, so-called religious people automatically included in those who could be considered as Christians? Of course, they would say yes, Brother Andrew, but what does the Bible actually say about that? What’s the truth?

Brother Andrew Fisher: Well, our Lord Jesus Christ has an answer for that. We can read it in the book of Matthew chapter 7 and in verses 21 up to verse 23. Let’s listen to what the Lord Jesus Christ says:

Not all who sound religious are really godly people. They may refer to me as ‘Lord,’ but still won’t get to heaven. But the decisive question is whether they obey my Father in heaven. At the Judgment many will tell me, ‘Lord, Lord, we told others about you and use your name to cast down demons and to do many other great miracles.’ But I will reply, ‘You have never been mine. Go away, for your deeds are evil.’

[Matthew 7: 21-23 Living Bible]

Brother Andrew Fisher: Dear friends and viewers, our Lord Jesus Christ made it very clear that not all who sound or even act religious are truly godly people. That was just because someone may say or claim that they are religious or that they’re Christians. Just because someone may even act like they are a religious person who believes in God, who claims that God knows them. That does not automatically mean that God knows them. Because like what we’ve just heard from our Lord Jesus Christ, what’s more important is that it is our Lord God that will know us.

Brother Bob Pellien:  Brother Andrew, why is that so important? You know, many people wouldn’t really go along with that. So what’s the requirement according to the scriptures, that one has to meet? What’s the determining factor?

Brother Andrew Fisher: Well, our Lord Jesus Christ Himself said that the decisive question is “whether they obey my Father in heaven.” So it is obedience to the Father that will determine whether God knows us. Even if we claim to know God, it’s our obedience that proves that God knows us.

[On-Screen Graphics]

Today’s Topic: Does God Know Me?

Brother Bob Pellien:  If someone did not obey God, He, of course, God being the Father in heaven. Let’s go to you, Brother Joseph. Could that person still be considered a Christian and have the help from our Lord Jesus Christ, to bring them safely into the Kingdom of Heaven and the upcoming Day of Judgment?

Brother Joseph Penwell: So then their friends, if one is with Christ, they will also be with God, because Christ is also with God.

[On-Screen  Graphics]

Joseph Penwell

Minister of the Gospel

Minneapolis, Minnesota

Brother Bob Pellien: So wait a second, Brother Joseph, why is that so important for our viewers to remember that?

Brother Joseph Penwell: Because if one is with God, he will be able to enter heaven, he will be saved, in other words. But on the other hand, if one does not obey God, he is not recognized by our Lord Jesus Christ, and such a person will not be saved.

Brother Bob Pellien: So wait, Brothers, if we meet, this is what we need to know, right? Well, who then is with Christ, so that God will acknowledge Him if being with Christ is how God will end up acknowledging them, who is with Christ, and then acknowledged by God, as one that He will save? Dear friends, when we come back in just a moment, we’re going to find out. Also, is having faith alone enough? And what else does God want people to do? The Bible will answer these and much more today, as the Iglesia Ni Cristo International Edition continues.

Brother Bob Pellien: Welcome back, everyone to this edition of the Iglesia Ni Cristo International Edition. In the first part of our study together, we learned some very important things.

[On-Screen Graphics]

Today’s Topic: Does God Know Me?

Brother Bob Pellien: We learned like having God know us is something that we need. We have to make sure of that, because merely claiming it does not make it so. We also learned that being with Christ is vital, as well. Why? Because that will only happen if one obeys the Father. And we posed this question as we left off before the break, we asked, well, who is actually with Christ? And therefore, God would recognize them, and God would save them on the Day of Judgment. Many people call themselves Christians, many people would say they’re with Christ. Is that all that we need to do? Just make such declaration? What should we understand about becoming a true Christian? Dear friends, before we answer that, let’s take a look at this brief video clip of people who, well, they already believe in God, and they realized that believing in God was not enough. Let’s hear what they have to say.

Tawanda Cochrane (Lemoore, California): If I didn’t have the Church, I would probably be in a deep depression…. in probably a bad relationship that I didn’t need to be in.

Candace Henderson (Jacksonville, Florida): My life would be a life full of fear. I would just be lost.

Isaias Lujano (Atlantic City, New Jersey): I was always worried. I was stressed.  I could barely sleep. I don’t know where my food was going to come from. I don’t know how I was going to feed my family. I don’t know if I was going to have a future.

Tawanda Cochrane (Lemoore, California): I probably wouldn’t be a good mother to my son. I probably wouldn’t listen or understand how he’s feeling or what he’s going through.

Zsolti Horvath (Surrey, Canada): I feel like before I joined the Church, my life was going in circles. It was like I was going one step forward, and then three steps backwards. I was never getting ahead.

Marda Debnam (Raleigh, North Carolina): I try not to think about what my life would be like outside of the Church Of Christ. And I joined the church when I was 20 years old, which is a very fragile age, especially when you’re in college and there’s so much going on.

Thomas Jones (New York, New York): So, what would my life be if I didn’t have God in my life? Is that what you said? I probably would be dead.

Thomas Jones (New York, New York): Having the Church Of Christ in my life has given me a better outlook. I’m able to beat off the devil. I’m able to look at things in a positive way, instead of always negative. I’m always appreciative just getting up in the morning.

Candace Henderson (Jacksonville, Florida): Well, now that I have a new-found faith in God, I don’t stress about it because the Bible says that these things are going to happen.

Zsolti Horvath (Surrey, Canada): Once I joined the Church, and I was baptized, and I dedicated myself to my offices and to God Himself, I feel like my life did a complete 180 [degrees].

Tawanda Cochrane (Lemoore, California): It put me on the right path. I’m not so anxious. I’m not so stressed about the worldly things anymore like I used to be. And I know as long as I have faith in God and pray to Him and let him know my concerns, I can let it go. He’s gonna take care of me.

Carlton Henderson– Former Anglican: My faith has helped me immensely because I have no fear of anything because I know God is with me. And through God, all things are made possible.

Isaias Lujano –Former Catholic: I can pray to God. He can help me with my problems and issues. And tell him about my worries,

Jennie Guerrero – Former Pentecostal: Even living with anxiety I still know and feel that God is with me. I feel that Christ is with me, that I can pray to Them when I’m having troubles.

Charles Louinel –Former Hatian Vodou: I was looking for a place where I felt like family, a place where I could feel God’s presence. Then I found the Church Of Christ and it’s the most important thing in my life.

Marda Debnam –Joined the INC in 1983: The Church Of Christ has impacted my life in so many ways. But I guess the best impact or the greatest impact has just been knowing that I have the right to receive salvation, that I am a member of the true Church.

[On-Screen Graphics]

Brother Joseph Penwell

Minister of the Gospel

Minneapolis, Minnesota

Brother Joseph Penwell: As we can see from the video, dear friends, there’s a striking difference between those who just believe, and those who take action to become part of the body of Christ.

[On-Screen Graphics]

Today’s Topic: Does God Know Me?

Brother Joseph Penwell: But as we asked earlier, how do we know who are the true Christians? Let us find out, it is Christ Himself who will give us the answer, as written here in John chapter is 10 and the verse is 14, listen to what our Lord says:

I am the good shepherd; I know my own, and my own, know me.

[John 10: 14 Revised Standard Version]

Brother Joseph Penwell: So, beloved brethren and dear friends, once again, we can see that just claiming to know our Lord Jesus Christ is not enough. Because our Lord Jesus Christ Himself stated very clearly, I know my own, and my own also know me. So there must be mutual recognition.

Brother Bob Pellien: But Brother, what’s the evidence, however, that one can use to prove that Christ actually recognizes and knows him? Meaning therefore then there’ll be one, or among those to be saved from destruction on the Day of Judgment?

[On-Screen Graphics]

Andrew Fisher

Minister of the Gospel

Melbourne, Australia

Brother Andrew Fisher: Or Brother Bob, if I can answer that question. It just reminds me of what I read earlier from our Lord Jesus Christ, because He mentioned that the decisive question is, the determining factor is if we obey. Therefore, we need to ask ourselves that decisive question, are we obeying and following the instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ for us to be saved?

Brother Bob Pellien: Yes, but Brothers, what is that instruction for those who want to be with Him, be considered a true Christian, and of course, then be saved?

Brother Joseph Penwell: Well, let Christ be the one to answer. Here we read again in John chapter 10 now verses 7 and 9. This is what he says:

So Jesus spoke again: ‘In very truth I tell you, I am the door of the sheepfold. I am the door; anyone who comes into the fold through me will be safe.

[John 10: 7 and 9]

Brother Joseph Penwell: So it was our Lord Jesus Christ, who told us that those who enter into the fold or into the flock are those who will be saved.

Brother Bob Pellien:  Let’s go to you for a second here Brother Jay. You know, what about those who would say, “Well, isn’t the flock mentioned there in that verse? Isn’t that just a metaphor, referring to everyone who believes in Christ and anyone who wants to be saved?”

Brother  Jay Acuña: Brother Bob, biblically speaking, that cannot be the case.

Brother Bob Pellien: Why not?

[On-Screen Graphics]

Jay Acuña

Minister of the Gospel

Anchorage, Alaska

Brother  Jay Acuña: Because we learned from the teaching of our Lord Jesus Christ, that there are people who believe in Him, they call on Him as Lord. But in reality, they don’t belong to him, because Christ does not recognize them. So the mutual recognition between Christ and those who belong to Him, only exists among the people who have entered the sheepfold or the flock.

[On-Screen Graphics]

Today’s Topic: Does God Know Me?

Brother Bob Pellien: So obvious question, then that we need to post together isn’t it is well, what then is that flock referred to by our Lord Jesus Christ, when He mentioned that people should come into it, in order to be saved?

Brother  Jay Acuña: The biblical answer is written in Acts 20:28, allow me to read:

Take heed, therefore to yourselves and to all the flock over which the Holy Spirit has appointed you overseers, feed the church of Christ which he has purchased with His blood.

[Acts 20:28 George Lamsa Translation]

Brother  Jay Acuña: The flock is the Church Of Christ, and our Lord Jesus Christ, instructed people to enter into the flock, or into the Church Of Christ, to be the true Christians, and to be saved. Therefore, those who joined the Church Of Christ, are the ones who truly completed the instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ, to enter the flock. And for that same reason, our Lord recognizes those inside the Church Of Christ as His own. What else is revealed here? Members of the Church Of Christ are the ones mentioned earlier that “now you know, God, even better, God knows you,” because God recognizes them as His own people.

[On-Screen Graphics]

Jay Acuña

Minister of the Gospel

Anchorage, Alaska

Brother Bob Pellien:  They have that mutual recognition, right? So, Brother Andrew, what if a person does not want to obey that instruction does not want to come in or to join into the Church Of Christ? You know, for many, they’ve been part of a particular church all their life and they may feel that they’re fine, in that particular church that they’re in, or that they belong to that church already.

[On-Screen Graphics]

Today’s Topic: Does God Know Me?

Brother Andrew Fisher: Brother Bob that may very well be the case. In fact, maybe even some of our viewers who are watching this program are in that very situation. However, we just want to clarify and also emphasize that the instruction to join the Church of Christ to enter the flock in order to be saved, is not one that we’ve come up with on our own. In fact, we’re just reading this directly from the Bible. And this is the instruction of the Savior Himself, none other than our Lord Jesus Christ.

[On-Screen Graphics]

Andrew Fisher

Minister of the Gospel

Melbourne, Australia

Brother Bob Pellien: But then is the situation of a person who believes, you know, they may really feel that they believe with all their heart that he’s already a Christian because he’s in some Christian professing religion, even though he has not yet followed Christ’s instruction to enter inside the Church Of Christ, that He shed His blood for. Brother Andrew, there’s a lot of people that really are convinced that they’re already okay.

[On-Screen Graphics]

Bob Pellien

Minister of the Gospel

San Francisco, California

Brother Andrew Fisher: You know, Brother Bob, they might feel that way. And they might really believe that in their hearts, but we can’t base our salvation and what we feel or and what’s in our hearts, but rather, shouldn’t be based on what’s in the Bible. So let’s read the answer to that question from the Bible. Here in the book of First John chapter 2 and the verse is 4, let’s listen to the Holy Scriptures:

Someone may say, “I am a Christian; I am on my way to heaven; I belong to Christ.” But if he doesn’t do what Christ tells him to, he is a liar.

[I John 2: 4 Living Bible]

Brother Andrew Fisher: You know, dear friends, the truth of the matter is, if one has not yet followed the instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ to enter the flock, or be inside the Church Of Christ, and even worse, if they refuse to follow that instruction, then they really are not Christians, according to the Bible. And what if they might claim that they’re Christians, they might even believe that they’re going to heaven. Well, the apostles made it clear. They are liars.

[On-Screen Graphics]

Today’s Topic: Does God Know Me?

Brother Bob Pellien:  Yes, that might seem harsh, but that’s not from us, right, Brother Andrew? No one wants to. Yes. And no one surely wants to be considered or called a liar. That’s horrible, right? especially when it comes to one’s relationship with Christ. So the only sensible thing then to do is well do what Christ is instructing to be done: join his flock, enter into His Church, which the Bible calls the Church of Christ. Why would anybody reject that? Since we learn the situation, dear friends, those who well, do not join the Church Of Christ. When we come back, we’re going to find out also what the situation will be if one just completely gives themselves to the Lord, compliance with the Lord Jesus Christ’s instructions, enter into His body, enter and join the true Church of Christ.

Brother Bob Pellien:  Now, you might be asking, what would be the benefit of that? Making such a drastic change in my life, one may say. Well, we’ll answer this one again, much more right here on the Iglesia Ni Cristo International Edition. Stay with us.

Bob Pellien

Minister of the Gospel

Brother Bob Pellien: Welcome back to the Iglesia Ni Cristo International Edition. In the first couple of parts of our study, well, we’ve learned some very important things.

[On-Screen Graphics]

Today’s Topic: Does God Know Me?

Brother Bob Pellien: For example, we need to make sure that we’re among those that God knows, and that God recognizes as His very own. And being with God’s Son, our Lord Jesus Christ is the way to God, that He will know us so that we could enter into His kingdom be saved, from punishment on the Day of Judgment. As well as understanding that merely claiming to know Christ and claiming to be a Christian does not prove anything. The evidence of being a true Christian is being a true member of the true Church Of Christ. And we left off by asking this well, what would be the benefit of making such a drastic change in my life? What will joining the Church Of Christ do for a person? Let’s go to you, Brother Joseph.

Brother Joseph Penwell: Let’s read that answer from the Apostle Paul, written in Ephesians chapter is 3 and the verse is 6. This is what he said:

The truth now revealed is that the Gentiles can be fellow heirs of God with Israel. They are eligible to be united in the same body–Christ’s Church. They can all now receive all the blessings God promises in the Great News about Christ.

[Ephesians 3:6 Last Days Bible]

[On-Screen Graphics]

Today’s Topic: Does God Know Me?

Brother Joseph Penwell: So those that learned this great news, the instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ, to enter into His church. If they follow it, according to what the Apostle Paul said, they will be united in the same body–Christ’s Church or the Church of Christ. And being in the Church Of Christ, they will receive all the promises that God made to those who will be saved.

[On-Screen Graphics]

Jay Acuña

Minister of the Gospel

Anchorage, Alaska

Brother Jay Acuña:  And Brother Joseph, that’s the reason why we continue to share the good news. It is our true hope that all of us, including everyone, who is with us listening today, would receive the great blessings coming from our Lord God, which He intended for those whom He knows. And God’s promises are to those who are with His Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, and members of the true Church of Christ, the true Christians.

Brother Bob Pellien:  And you know, Brothers, what is God’s ultimate blessing that He promises to the true Christians? And when will this blessing be received?

Brother Jay Acuña: Let’s read that in Revelation 14:13:

Then I heard a voice from heaven say, “Write: Blessed are the dead who from this time forth die as Christians!” “Yes!” answers the Spirit, ”Let them rest from their toil, for what they have done will go with them!”

[Revelation 14:13 Goodspeed Translation]

Brother Jay Acuña: The greatest blessing which God promised to those who truly belong to Him is receiving salvation on Judgment Day. And this is also the true rest in the Holy City. And for everyone viewing because of the great value of this blessing, we have to do everything that we need to do, everything that we have to fulfill, to receive that blessing.

[On-Screen Graphics]

Today’s Topic: Does God Know Me?

Brother Bob Pellien: So we can see then Brothers, dear friends that well, those God knows those that He recognizes as His people are true Christians. They are those that have joined His Son’s body, or have entered inside the Church Of Christ. And friends to all those who are listening to this important message we hope and pray that these words guide you to take all the necessary actions to be among those the Bible mentions as they whom God knows.

Brother Bob Pellien: But before we go, we want to introduce you to Peter. Peter, like many, grew up being forced to go to church. But he never quite understood what it truly meant to be known by God until now.  Let’s take a look at what he says.

Peter Kaisara (Former Catholic): Mom and Dad said, “Go to church.” If you don’t go to church, you get a smack on your backside. At the time, I thought that the Catholic (church) was the true church. When I started studying the Bible in the Church Of Christ, it it really shocked my system.

Stories of Faith

My name is Ah-Ka-Peh-Kah. Peter Kaisara, born in the Cook Islands on the island of Rarotonga. We have six in the family, and I’m the last born and I’m the, you could say, the naughty…naughty one. While I was going to school, I was doing, you know, bad things, like drinking, smoking while at school. And pretty much partying and then we go to school while drunk. Eventually, I quit school at a very young age.

Mom and Dad said, “Go to church.” If you don’t go to church, you get smack on your backside. So it’s pretty much being forced to go to church, but to me, I had no clue what God is, and pretty much just copying like everybody else. Not to say that I’m a proud Catholic, I couldn’t understand what the Bible was saying. Even though I was reading it. I didn’t feel that something in the Catholic Church wasn’t true. Seeing the doctrine of the Catholic Church, doing the opposite, that made me question, you know, my faith in the Catholic Church and made me want to search more.

I posted a post about the Catholic Church, and one of my friends in New Zealand commented on that post. So we were debating on that post in terms of the Catholic faith and one of the brothers in Perth, Australia, commented on the post and telling us, “Hey, guys, you know, check this website.” I [thought], “He thinks that this is the true church.”. So he put the [incmedia.org] website underneath his comments. So that’s the site I went on and had a look at the website.

When I [clicked] on incmedia.org, I started reading all these topic[s].  It was…to be honest, I haven’t read anything like this before. It was… I was at peace reading it. So I replied to this brother in Perth, his name is Don, and asking him for information on how I could find any local church in my area. So he came back two days later, and provided me with the phone number of one of the ministers in my area. When I started studying the Bible in the Church Of Christ, it really shocked my system, and I said to myself, “I was doing all [of] these things the wrong way, worshiping God, praying to God.” Because in the Bible, the Bible said, “Do not worship idols.” And as you can see in the Catholic Church, they have all these statues scattered in the church.

Listening to Brother Glenn, the first listen he did… it actually [drew] me closer to the lesson. And as we go along to the second, to the third, it’s–my faith grew, and I truly believe that God has shown me the true Church. Everything they said to me, actually [came] from the Bible, and they didn’t give their own opinion. And the lesson was amazing! Now that I fully understand, I was fired up, I was hungry, I needed more.

If I listen to Jesus Christ, telling us in John 10:9, “If anyone enters by me, he will be saved.” That was the ‘aha’ moment for me. I feel that God has answered my prayer. I feel that He directed me to the true Church Of Christ and I feel that I’m on the top of the world, because I know that God can actually hear my prayer. I feel grateful for the love and mercy of our Heavenly Father.
