Amid rising food costs and inflation, thousands of care packages are given to residents of Canada across the country, in order to provide food assistance to those in need.

The Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC or Church Of Christ) again launched a series of charity events across Canada called “Care For Humanity” to help communities affected by inflation and rising food costs. Last October, the INC was able to reach out to Canadians in the cities of Surrey, British Columbia; Airdrie and Edmonton, Alberta; Winnipeg, Manitoba, Lloydminster, Saskatchewan, Brampton and Greater Toronto, Ontario, and Montreal, Quebec.

The INC, in partnership with the Felix Y. Manalo (FYM) Foundation, handed out over 2,100 care packages to individuals and charity organizations across Canada. Among the charity organizations that received food and care packages were La Maison Entre Familles, Refugee Claimants Donations Montreal, Windermere Ukrainian Refugee Center, Welcome Collective and West Island Assistance Fund and the Surrey Food Bank Society.

These care packages contained a variety of food items such as cereal, canned meat, cup noodles, pasta, pasta sauce, canned fruit, cookies, canned vegetables, and oatmeal, as well as some hygiene essentials such as shampoo, soap, and toothpaste.

In Edmonton, Alberta, a total of $4,000 was distributed by the Felix Y. Manalo Foundation to assist local charities. Among the charity organizations that received the cash donations were Kids With Cancer Society, Boyle Street Community Services, Edmonton’s Food Bank, and the Multicultural Family Resource Society.

Meanwhile, in Surrey, British Columbia, over 325 boxes of non-perishable food items were given to the Surrey Food Bank Society.

Diego Oliveira, a Surrey Food Bank Society representative, noted how it was important to keep the donations coming in.  He observed that while there was an increase in clients after the pandemic, there was also a marked decrease in donations.

“So before the pandemic, we were giving, for example, five products and now they can get three. So that’s why we really need the community. We need to keep the donations going up right now,” he said.

Through its various socio-civic and humanitarian efforts, the Iglesia Ni Cristo aims to build positive relationships with communities. Through acts of kindness, its members continue to follow the biblical command to “do good to those who need it.” (Prov. 3:27, Good News Translation)

Currently, the INC has active members in 165 countries and territories. Its membership comprises 150 ethnicities and nationalities.
