Have we ever felt just so sad that we could not help but cry out as we suffer through life’s difficulties and sadness? Can we ever have true or lasting happiness? If it is possible for us to have that kind of happiness or joy, when, where, and how can we have it?
Brother Johnny: Have we ever felt just so sad that we could not help but cry out as we suffer through life’s difficulties and sadness? Can we ever have true or lasting happiness? If it is possible to have that kind of happiness or joy, when, where, and how can we have it? That’s our topic today. I’m Johnny Martin and welcome to the Iglesia Ni Cristo International Edition.Joining us this week are Brother Mark Vasquez from Jacksonville, Florida, Brother Donald Pinnock from Toronto, Canada, and Brother Jojo Bayani from San Francisco, California. Good day to you brothers.
Brother Mark: Hi Brother Johnny.
Brother Donald: Hello Brother Martin.
Brother Johnny: Dear viewers, the different problems that we encounter in life bring about loneliness and sadness to many people. Though man strives his best to ensure happiness in his life, the result usually is the opposite. If there was joy and happiness that he feels, this subsides and gets replaced by disappointments and hardships. We can see this happening especially with people who have the mindset that they will only be happy if they are materially prosperous. God’s servants should not have that kind of mentality. Now before we begin our discussion, let’s watch this video where this young man addresses the question of why people are so unhappy.
On-screen text: Insatiable Wanting Machines – “It is of the nature of desire not to be satisfied, and most men live only for the gratification of it.”
Host: One of the maladies of the modern age is that even though collectively we have more than we’ve ever dreamed possible, we remain (laughs) perpetually dissatisfied. It’s almost like we are wired never to be content and it seems to be the case. I mean it’s been written that we are insatiable wanting machines designed to desire and so in some ways that has made us reach out and transcend boundaries. We didn’t stay in the caves. We haven’t stayed on the planet. We went to the moon. We crisscrossed the skies. We extend and we transcend, but on the other hand that exploratory itch, that genetic pull that makes us tread forth always in search of the insatiable deliciousness of the new, the holy other, the mysterium tremendum et fascinosum of the unfamiliar also makes quotidian day-to-day life kind of banal. Again, it’s kind of sad because the very same quality that makes us these majestic creatures that soar above the heavens and transcend their boundaries has made us perpetually dissatisfied, neurotic beings living in urban centers, drowning in consumption and an over capitalist bloated system that can no long satiate us; always wanting something else until we’re like, you know, overwhelmed and over waked and like, you know, immobilized by how spoiled we’ve become and yet we enjoy very little of it. So what do we do? How do we find a way to leverage and combine and reconfigure the tension of the situation? We always want more has made us great but that we always want more also makes us kind of miserable. And so, I don’t know, I haven’t resolved that yet. I haven’t resolved that yet. (Sigh)
Brother Johnny: All right brothers, we just watched that video where that young man is responding to the question about what is the reason that people are so unhappy. Your reactions please brothers. Brother Mark if we could begin with you.
Brother Mark: Well, brothers, from this video that we just watched it seems as though this gentleman is implying that it’s impossible for people to find true happiness. It’s a question that even he wants to know the answer to. He feels as though that men can’t find true happiness in this life.
Brother Donald: In the video that we watched, Brother Johnny, it was mentioned by the speaker that many people, they are not satisfied when it comes to what they have. It seems as if man wants more and more. He never is content with what he has achieved or he has amassed. And that is very very true when it comes to so many people nowadays.
Brother Jojo: I think another important thing to point out based on that gentleman’s video is the fact that we se many people in this world who take what can be considered as a good thing, a positive thing, as something just taken for granted, something unimportant. And so as he mentioned over and over, man is dissatisfied, man is left with wanting more and more, never happy, never content.
Brother Johnny: Now, brothers and dear viewers, it would be no surprise that as we live from day to day, we see people that are burdened with worries and anxieties in life. Now what does the Bible teach the servants of God to do, even though we are in a world filled with worries? Brother Mark, what does the Bible command them to do even though they are in the midst of suffering?
Brother Mark: Brother Johnny, let’s read a verse in the Bible. We’ll read Psalms 37:4. This is what the Bible says.
Delight yourself also in the LORD, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
[Psalms 37:4 New King James Version]
What does the Bible teach the true servants of God even though we live in a world full of worries, even thought we might suffer in this life. Well, the Bible reminded us, “Delight yourself in the LORD.” Thus the true servants of the Lord God find their happiness in him even though there might be sufferings in this life.
Brother Johnny: Now, Brother Donald, what is this delight or joy in the Lord that the servants of God are to find in Him?
Brother Donald: Weal we can read the answer, Brother Johnny, here in Isaiah 61, and the verse is 10.
I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, My soul shall be joyful in my God; For He has clothed me with the garments of salvation, He has covered me with the robe or righteousness, …
[Isaiah 61:10 New King James Version]
Therefore when he comes to the joy or delights, the God’s servants can find in him according to what we’ve read, “God has clothed them with the garments of salvation. This is the very reason then why even though the people of the Lord, our God, they may encounter different kinds of tribulations, and difficulties, and hardships in life, they are inspired when it comes to this promise of the Lord our God, the promise of salvation. That is why they are full with joy; they are full of delight.
Brother Johnny: Now, Brother Jojo, who have God’s true servants put on, which is why they are closed with the garments of salvation?
Brother Jojo: Brother Johnny we can read the answer from the Bible here from the book of Galatians, chapter 3, verse 27.
For as man of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
[Galatians 3:27 New King James Version]
So when it comes to the true servants, the people that belong to our Lord Jesus Christ, what is it exactly that they have put on? According to the Bible once they are baptized into Christ, they actually are able to put on our Lord Jesus Christ. If we read from another version of the Bible it says the following, “All of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourself with Christ.”
This is how people who have come to belong to our Lord Jesus Christ have been able to put on, what is called by the Bible, as garments, the kind of garments with regard to salvation. They have put on the garments of salvation because, once they were baptized, they have actually put on our Lord Jesus Christ himself. They have been clothed with our Lord Jesus Christ.
Brother Johnny: But, you know, Brother Mark, others might say even though they’re not members of the Church of Christ, they have also received their own baptism in to their respective religions, and thus they claim they too have put on the Lord Jesus Christ and thereby have been clothed with the garments of salvation. So the question is this, who are the ones whom the Apostles refer to as the ones who received baptism and put on our Lord Jesus Christ?
Brother Mark: The apostles made it very clear who are the ones that receive the true baptism. And we’ll read that together in I Corinthians, 12, and the verse is 13.
For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and have all been made to drink into one Spirit.
[I Corinthians 12:13 New King James Version]
Brothers, we asked where is it that the true Christians are baptized into, who received the true baptism, and they are the ones who have put on the Lord Jesus Christ. The Bible told us we were all baptized into one body. So the ones who put on the Lord Jesus Christ, or have the garments of salvation, they are the ones who are baptized into one body. Even though one might say, and think, and assumed that they already did the steps necessary to be considered part of those who have the garments of salvation and that they are the ones who will experience true happiness, the Bible made it very clear. The ones that have put on Christ and will experience a true happiness are the ones in the one body.
Brother Johnny: Now, Brother Donald, let me go to you please, which is this one body, wherein we can find the ones who receive the true baptism and are clothed with the garments of salvation or they are the ones who are saved?
Brother Donald: Well we can read the answer in this declaration of the Apostle Paul; recorded here in Ephesians 5, the verse is 23.
For a husband has authority over his wife just as Chirst has authority over the church; and Christ is himself the Savior of the church, his body.
[Ephesians 5:23 Good News Translation]
Therefore, when it comes to the body, wherein we can find those who’ve received the true baptism, and thus they clothed the garments of salvation, that body is none other than the church. But which church is being referred to here? Well it is the church that is recognized as the body of Christ, or it is the church that Christ is the head of. Now why are we sure that when it comes to the members of this body of our Lord Jesus Christ, or this church, the members therein have the assurance of salvation? Because it is stated in the verse that we have read that Christ is himself, the savior of his body. Therefore if there are those who are not inside the body of our Lord Jesus Christ, as was mentioned earlier by Brother Mark, they cannot have the assurance of attaining salvation. But those who are within the body of our Lord Jesus Christ, or the church headed by Christ, they have the assurance of salvation come Judgment Day.
Brother Johnny: Well Brother Jojo, you know, people know that there are lots of churches in the world today. Does the Bible tell us which church is the one body of our Lord Jesus Christ?
Brother Jojo: We can read that from the book of Acts, chapter 20, verse 28.
Take heed therefore to yourselves and to all the flock over which the Holy Spirit has appointed you overseers, to feed the church of Christ which he as purchased with his blood.
[Acts 20:28 George M. Lamsa]
Does the Bible tell us which church is true? Which church belongs to our Lord Jesus Christ? It certainly does. What is the name of the church that is headed by Christ? The church, which is the body of our Lord Jesus Christ? The Bible tells us it is none other than the Church of Christ. Therefore when the people are baptized into this one and only true church, the Church of Christ, something wonderful happens. Even though they are still living in a very difficult world, even though they may be in the roughest situations of their lives, once they are baptized inside the true church, the Church of Christ, it means that they have put on Christ. It means that they have clothed themselves with Christ, and so they are also clothed with the garments of salvation. So waiting for the true members of the Church of Christ on the Day of Judgment is both eternal life and salvation. Brother Johnny, and our fellow brothers in the panel, and especially our dear viewers, this is what give us, members of the Church of Christ, happiness. We’re proud of being members of the Church of Christ in spite of the difficulties that we may be experiencing at present.
Brother Johnny: Now brothers, there are people who hear this teaching of the Bible about the importance of becoming a member of the Church of Christ to receive the promise of salvation, well how about in your part of the world? How many people are in the process of actually joining the church? Brother Donald how about there in Canada?
Brother Donald: Well here in Canada we can truly see the works of the Almighty God. We have people from not only different walks of life, but also various cultural backgrounds who are listening to the gospel inside the true Church of Christ. Nowadays we even have those who are former pastors or preachers in their former church or religion who are undergoing bible studies. And they are so determined to become members of this church because they understand the importance of becoming a member of the church established by our Lord Jesus Christ.
Brother Johnny: Brother Jojo, how about for those who live there in California?
Brother Jojo: Yes brother. We see that there are a lot of people who are interested in listening to our teachings taught inside the Church of Christ, or Iglesia Ni Cristo in Filipino. In fact, whenever we hold what we call our bible studies or our evangelical missions, we see that there are many guests, again, from different walks of life and different nationalities and specifically in the district where I’m a part of, Northeast California, bible studies are being offered not only in English, but also in Filipino and even in Spanish.
Brother Johnny: Now brother Mark, we can see that people are joining the Church of Christ in Canada, in America, in different parts of the world, but there are also those who refuse to become members of the Church of Christ because they think or believe it’s just enough to have faith in Jesus Christ and accept him as Lord and personal Savior in order to be saved. What about those who are thinking like that or are reacting in that way when it comes to membership in the Church of Christ? They don’t want to be part of the church.
Brother Mark: Well there are those who think that it’s important to only believe and have faith and accept the Lord Jesus Christ, well they’re on the right track. However it’s not enough to just simply believe, have faith, and accept the Lord Jesus Christ. The Bible does teach that we need to do those things, but inasmuch as the Bible teaches those things, the Bible also teaches that we should be baptized into the Church of Christ because the Church of Christ is what will be saved.
Brother Donald: And based also on the teachings, if I may interject, Brother Johnny, if there are those who say that they believe in our Lord Jesus Christ, they’ve accepted him as their personal savior, but yet they have not become a baptized member of the church, built or established by our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore they have not put on our Lord Jesus Christ. They have not put on the clothing of salvation. So tragically they do not have that assurance of being saved come Judgment Day.
Brother Jojo: Now on the other hand, if I may add something to that Brother Johnny, for us members of the Iglesia Ni Cristo, or the Church of Christ, having been able to put on Christ, having been clothed with Christ once we receive the holy baptism inside the Church of Christ, that gives us great assurance that on the Day of Judgment we will be rewarded with salvation and everlasting life. That is what gives us great joy and delight in the midst of the troubled world that we live in.
Brother Johnny: Now, brothers and dear viewers, even though we may be members of the Church of Christ, or the Iglesia Ni Cristo, well we know what life is like here in the world. There are trying and difficult times. Now when it comes to that, trying and difficult times, should those trials and persecutions that we face bring a sadness? That’s what we’ll talk about next as the Iglesia Ni Cristo International Edition continues. Don’t go away.
Brother Johnny: Welcome back, everyone, to the Iglesia Ni Cristo International Edition. We have been talking about true happiness. Others find their happiness in worldly success and owning nice things, but that kind of happiness is not true and lasting. It does not last long from the moment that problems show up, that happiness fades away. But the bible has shown us that the true and lasting happiness that people should aspire for is the salvation that has been promised to the true servants of God. Who in our time are the members of the true Church of Christ? Now let’s watch this video of what other last about happiness.
What is Happiness? Learn How to Be Happy In Life
Host: In the last 6 months more than 1,000 books have been published about it. Universities around the world are teaching on it. For 30 years scientists have been studying it. Governments are appointing cabinet positions to oversee it. The United Nations named an official day after it. Google analytics prove people are searching for it. In fact it’s one of humanity’s oldest pursuits. Happiness. We are wealthier, more educated, and live longer than any previous generation. And as a nation, the United States is one of the wealthiest, most powerful, and technologically advanced. And in the most recent world happiness report, the United States ranked 17th. And during the Great Depression when there was little to be happy about, we were actually 18% less depressed than we are now. We’ve been taught that hard work equals success, which equals happiness. Right? (laughs) Wrong. Research proves happiness is actually a precursor to success, not the other way around. Did you know neuroscience proves that we are hard wired to perform at our best when we are happy? Studies show that happy, positive, optimistic people earn higher incomes, set and achieve more aggressive goals, experience less stress, remain calm in high pressure situations, are more energetic, recover from illness faster, and live longer. Happiness is serious business. When we engage in positive real life relationships, our bodies release chemicals that actually help reduce anxiety and increase concentration and focus. How you feel and your attitude towards life all stem from your thoughts, actions, and where you focus your time and energy, yet we are constantly surrounded by negativity. If we want things to change, we have to create the change and we start by choosing positivity and happiness. Just imagine the possibilities if there were more happy and positive people in this world. A world with more peace, optimism, and compassion is possible. Like a pebble thrown into a pond; it only takes one to create the ripple of happiness. Happiness is so contagious and infectious that one positive person can spread happiness to more than 1,000 people. That means all it takes to create change on a local, regional, state, country, global scale, is 1 person. And research shows that just by spreading happiness, you actually become happier. You can choose happiness and choose to share it. You can be the catalyst to spread it directly and indirectly. Are you that one? It starts with you yet it’s bigger than you. Happiness is bold. It is courageous, audacious, and challenging. You have the power to choose happiness and to spread it. Join the movement. Share the movement. Be the one who makes the difference and live happy.
Brother Johnny: All right brothers, we just watched that video where the video is encouraging people to be happy while they’re living in this world and how their being happy can even influence others around them to be happy as well. Your comments, please. Brother Jojo if we can begin with you.
Brother Jojo: We also heard from that same video that even wealth and even long life, longevity, is not really a guarantee of being happy in this world. In fact they say that the United States ranks only among the top 20 with regard to being generally happy. So people need to be happier, I think, and more content.
Brother Johnny: Brother Donald, how about you?
Brother Donald: Well when it came to that video, Brother Johnny, it was stated that the benefits of being happy can relate to their means of livelihood and it gives a person inner calm. But what was not mentioned was that those who are happy are also content. This is the quality of so many members of the Church of Christ throughout the world. Materially they may not be so well off as other people. They may have struggle or find it hard but yet they have that inner contentment and that is why they are happy. They’re happy because they have again that assurance of attaining salvation. And it is also reinforced by the spirit that we receive from the Lord our God.
Brother Mark: Brother Johnny, what we noticed in that video there was a part that they emphasize that some people do not have happiness because of the amount of negativity that‘s around them. When they see it in the media, they can see it on the news, every corner that they look at it, they feel like they’re surrounded by negativity and this affects them to, in turn, become negative. However we shouldn’t be influenced this much by the world that it would affect us and we would feel like we would be sad just because the surroundings that we have are sad as well.
Brother Johnny: You know what’s interesting, brothers and dear viewers, that even though people would strive to be happy while they’re living here in this world and it would make that effort to make themselves and even other people happy, still that happiness will eventually fade when problems come into their lives. Now, members of the Church of Christ, dear viewers, we’re still living her in the world so we also face problems. Now Brother Mark, should the trials and persecutions we encounter bring about sadness? Should the trials and persecutions experienced by members of the Church of Christ cause them to despair?
Brother Mark: Brother Johnny, we can read that answer here in I Peter, we’ll read 4:12, and we’ll keep reading until verse 16.
My dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful test you are suffering, as though something unusual were happening to you. Rather be glad that you are sharing Christ’s suffering, so that you may be full of joy when his glory is revealed. Happy are you if you are insulted because you are Christ’s followers; this means that the glorious Spirit, is resting on you. If you suffer, it must not be because you are a murderer or a thief or a criminal or a meddler in other people’s affairs. However, if you suffer because you are a Christian, don’t be ashamed of it, but thank God that you bear Christ’s name.
[I Peter 4:16 Good News Translation]
Brother Johnny, to go back to that question that you asked, should we be overcome with sadness and maybe even depression just because of life’s problems and tests? The answer is no. We have to remember is what the Bible told us. When it comes to problems and any kind of suffering we might have in life, the first thing that we should remember is the Bible said, “Do not be surprised at the painful tests you are suffering.” So thus the apostles already warned us that we would experience these kinds of things in life.
Brother Donald: What is the second principle that members of the Church of Christ keep in mind when they are undergoing sufferings, trials, or hardships? Well the apostles remind us, “Be glad that you are sharing in Christ’s sufferings.” That is why when it comes to us members of the Church of Christ, when we go through these tribulations in life we understand that we are sharing in the sufferings of our Lord Jesus Christ. And that is why we are still glad, we are still happy because those sufferings, they are worthwhile. We are suffering for our Savior.
Brother Jojo: And I think there’s a third thing we should point out. If we asked a question, “Are the members of the Church of Christ, or the Iglesia Ni Cristo, on the losing end even if they have to experience painful, the Bible tells us painful trials? Even if they have to go through sufferings, if they are persecuted or insulted because they bear the name of Christ as members of his church, the Church of Christ? Well the answer is no because the Bible says happy, in other words blessed, are you if you are insulted because you are Christ’s followers. So that is what we members of the Church of Christ look forward to on the Day of Judgment. There is a reward for all the things that we have to give up, all the things that we have to sacrifice, all the things that we have to painfully go through and that is, as we have said before, salvation and everlasting life.
Brother Johnny: But you know, brothers, people are thinking about their lives right now in the world. And in this world people worry a lot about the things they need to survive. They’re anxious about having enough for themselves and for their families. They’re concerned about having sufficient food, clothing, education, and shelter so this leads others to focus all their attention, all their time, all their effort on getting those things. Now, Brother Donald, why do members of the Church of Christ still prioritize their faith and membership in the church despite the hardships they face? Why don’t they worry about having the so-called basic necessities of life?
Brother Donald: Well the members of the Church of Christ, Brother Johnny and our viewers, they heed to the instruction of our Lord Jesus. We can read here in Matthew 6, and the verse are 31 to 32.
Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.
[Matthew 6:31-32 New King James Version]
Please note this, our Lord Jesus Christ says to his true followers, the members of his church, that they should not worry about their food, their clothing, their shelter, or the basic necessities in life. It doesn’t mean to say that the members of the church, they should not pay attention when it comes to earning a living, the parents looking after the members of their family. Yes, these are responsibilities that should be fulfilled. But we should not be excessively concerned or worried, not like, according to our Lord Jesus Christ, the Gentiles or those who are separated from him.
Brother Johnny: Well, Brother Jojo, who are the ones whom our Lord Jesus Christ refers to as the Gentiles who are the ones who worry about or seek after the material things?
Brother Jojo: Well let’s read the same couple of verses from another translation of the Bible; Matthew 6:31-32 from the Contemporary English Version. This is what the Bible tells us.
Don’t worry and ask yourselves, “Will we have anything to eat? Will we have anything to drink? Will we have any clothes to wear?” Only people who don’t know God are always worrying about such things. Your Father in heaven knows that you need all of these.
[Matthew 6:31-32 Contemporary English Version]
Who does the Bible refer to as Gentiles? As we have just read, these are referring to people who do not know our Almighty God. On the other hand, if one is a member of the true Church of Christ, he is not among those who do not know God. He knows God; he’s already worshipping and serving God the correct way. And so he follows the teachings of God. He doesn’t worry so much about the material things in life.
Brother Johnny: Now, Brother Mark, why should the members of the Church of Christ be glad, not worried, about the things that they need in this life while living in a world that’s riddled with problems and troubles and sufferings?
Brother Mark: Let’s read the statement of our Lord Jesus Christ in John 16: 24.
Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.
[John 16:24 New King James Version]
Why is it that members of the Church of Christ shouldn’t be overwhelmed with the amount of negative things that they might see around them? We saw it earlier in that video that we watched together that sometimes people are affected by the amount of negative things around them. But we shouldn’t be overwhelmed with this because the Lord Jesus Christ said, “Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.” So we could always ask for things from our Lord Jesus Christ. Our joy will be complete like the Lord Jesus Christ said, it will be full if we was him for all of our needs.
Brother Johnny: Now, of course, dear brothers and dear viewers, members of the Church of Christ, or Iglesia Ni Cristo, are still living in this truly imperfect world and also experience their share of difficulties. While others turn to other things, even illegal or unrighteous things, to relieve them of their sadness and bring them happiness however fleeting, well brothers, what do members of the Church of Christ turn to? What brings joy and comfort to the chosen people of God and who is their comforter? Well that’s what we’ll talk about next as the Iglesia Ni Cristo International Edition continues. Stay with us.
Brother Johnny: Welcome back everyone to the Iglesia Ni Cristo International Edition. We are still talking about happiness. Unfortunately this world does not offer true and lasting happiness because here there are troubles, problems, and suffereings. Of course it’s not wrong to be happy whil living here in this troubled world. As long as what we do that brings us happiness does not go against the will of God. Now let’s watch this video where people aswer the question, “What makes you happy?”

On-screen graphics: What makes you happy?
Brother Johnny: All right brothers that was a very interesting video that we watched from people of different ages, different backgrounds for answering the question “What makes they happy?”. Well brothers, what would you like to say, let’s just say for example, let’s say you were asked a question “What makes you happy?” How would you answer that? Now Brother Mark if we could begin with you please.
Brother Mark: You know Brother Johnny after seeing all those reactions of other people to that question, first thing that I realized is that we have some things in common, things that make them happy that could also make me happy. when it comes to certain foods or TV programs. But the things that make other people happy, the first things that came to their mind were things that were very temporary. It’s not something that would be a long term happiness or something that would last forever.
Brother Donald: I feel the same way just like Brother Mark. What was mentioned in that video were very temporary or momentary feelings of joy or happiness or gladness. When it comes to true happiness that one can find only in the Lord our God through his son, our Lord Jesus Christ, not even one of them mentioned that.
Brother Johnny: Well Brother Donald, I’d like to stay with your please. While others turn to other things, even illegal or unrighteous things, to relieve them of their sadness and bring them happiness, what about the members of the Iglesia Ni Cristo, or the Church Of Christ? What brings joy and comfort to the chosen people of God?
Brother Donald: We can read the answer to that question Brother Johnny, here in Psalms 119, verses 141, 143.
I am unimportant and despised, but I do not neglect your teachings. I am filled with trouble and anxiety but your commandments bring me joy.
[Psalms 119:141, 143 Good News Translation]
