Dwindling membership have left worship buildings across the US with no other option but to close their doors. But there is one Church that seems to be going against the trend, reopening abandoned worship buildings and revitalizing communities. Hear what communities are saying about their new neighborhood Church.
VO 1: “Lot’s of very prominent churches that were downtown and they simply lost population, so you know, when you lose the youthful population the church dies…”VO 2: “…Christ Lutheran is closing its doors…”
VO 3: “…last mass they’ll celebrate in this building…”
VO 4: “…parish is closing its doors after 50 years of service…”
VO 5: “A new house of worship comes to our burrow, it’s the Church Of Christ on Fulton avenue.”
Robert Park: “Listen, this is going to do more for this neighborhood, I think. And you take a look at the neighborhood; I think this is exactly what it needs. You know, it needs a religious base to kind of revive things.
Gloria Cruz: “It’s not only a church, I mean, it’s a church with dignity that you can see it from everywhere not only physically, but you can feel there’s something different going on here.”
Bill Knapp: “ God bless them, they’re coming in here ‘cause the church is empty for so long, a lot of damage…”
Ty Pearson: “Family been since 1988 and this is the first someone over here in these churches have done something over here like this. I mean a lot of people come over here they don’t associate, they don’t talk to us but you guys were really inviting, so that’s really good.”
Donna Williams: “…it’s gonna be a great access to this area.”
Joe Makowski: “When the snow’s here, the snow is all shoveled so quickly. There were people from here that came an swept the leaves in the park in the back, maybe 30 people at one time. With this change, and I watched it from the beginning it is amazing, the transformation…”
Virginia Greer: “You know I hope that they utilize the church, I hope that they come to know Jesus…”
Dorothy Marquez: “I wish that everyone here would make it their home church, I wish it would be one welcoming…it would be a community church.”
Minister: “You’re always welcome to attend since you live so close.”
Visitor: “I’ll probably be here…”
Gloria Cruz: “It’s been impacting already, because everybody that [passes by sees] there’s something going on here. This place is different. This place is making a difference in the community.”
