Happiness is Holiness
When raising our children to be God-centered and less self-centered, what advice can the Bible give us about being God-centered children?
For us to become God-centered, we need to be God-aware. In other words, we need to be aware of God working in our life. Even though He is spirit, we cannot see Him, we need to be aware God is there, God is always with us. So how do you develop that? In the book of 1 Corinthians 10:31 it says the following:
Well, whatever you do, whether you eat or drink, do it all for God’s glory.
The Bible says we need to do everything – everything – for God’s glory.
But then, there are others who believe that you only live once, and so all they worry about is taking care of themselves, making sure that they get theirs.
So they want to be happy, right? And so they believe that they become happy by becoming selfish.
“if God is not with you, you can live in a palace and you will be absolutely miserable.”
Selfishness has a way of destroying relationships. And if you don’t have good relationships, it doesn’t matter where you live or what kind of car you drive – you’re not going to be happy! This is why selfishness is not a way to happiness. What we want is a God-centered lifestyle. Unfortunately, the message of society is to promote self. But God says deny self. When God sees us denying self, God steps in our life, and we become God-centered, and we are aware of His presence.
But, I hear some people complain that living a God-centered life must be boring? I mean there are too many restrictions, so many rules…
People think that if you will live a godly and holy life, your life will be devoid of fun, your life will be boring, but that’s not true. People who say that, have never experienced the presence of God. Because once you feel the presence of God in your life, you will never exchange that for anything else here on earth. In fact, this is what the bible says concerning those who have received the presence of God. Psalms 16:11 Good News Translation:
You will show me the path that leads to life; your presence fills me with joy and brings me pleasure forever.
God is not boring. You know who’s boring? It’s we who are boring. You know what people do to try and make their life more fun and happy? Sometimes they do drugs, right? They drink alcohol. They have cheap thrills. And that’s sad. That’s not what true happiness is. That’s not what true joy is. Think about people you know who are godly, are they happy?
You know, from our experience, and we’re not surprised by this, but the happiest people in the world are the people who are closest to God. Because, if you’re close to God, you can be in a dungeon – like Apostle Paul. When he was in the dungeon, when he was in a jail cell, he wrote to the Christians, and he said “Rejoice always”. You see, if God is with you, even if you are in a dungeon, you will be happy; you will be filled with joy. But if God is not with you, you can live in a palace and you will be absolutely miserable. This is why it’s good to be God-centered. And you know what else is the advantage of one who is God-centered and aware of the presence of God?
The book of Psalms 16:8 Good News Translation:
I am always aware of the Lord’s presence; he is near, and nothing can shake me
Isn’t that nice? You know, no matter what we do, no matter what we teach our children, they’re going to face difficult times. But if they have been trained all along to live a God-centered life, when they do experience difficult times, because of their awareness of the presence of God, they will be able to overcome that. “I will not be shaken,” . This is why we need to develop that. It’s an awesome experience to feel the power and love of our Almighty God. If you’re self-centered, I really feel bad for that person. He doesn’t know what he’s missing…
“Happiness is more of a byproduct of holiness. If you will seek happiness for happiness’ sake, you mess up.”
So being God-centered doesn’t just bring happiness, but it brings peace.
And when you think about it, the path to happiness is holiness. Happiness is more of a byproduct of holiness. If you will seek happiness for happiness’ sake, you mess up. You look for it in the wrong places, like alcohol, drugs, Vegas. And you’re not going to find it. You’re going to find cheap thrills, but not lasting joy and happiness. True joy, true happiness is a byproduct of holiness. This is why God-centered living is the best way to live your life here on earth.
